Weather Watch
After a few days of some very wet conditions, New Zealand is looking at some pleasant weather starting on Tuesday.
But, we've got to get through today and tomorrow first.
The South Island probably won't be that wet today and tomorrow. The front that brought all the rain to the western and northern regions Friday and yesterday has moved north and is now spreading rain across the North Island. There will be some lingering showers about the north and west SI. The deep south could also see a bit of precipitation.
But most of the rain will be found about the North Island. Rain is expected across most of the North Island for the rest of today and through much of tomorrow. Even some heavy rain is possible, mainly about Taranaki. Although the threat for heavy rain will diminish by tomorrow afternoon.
On Tuesday, a big ridge of high pressure builds in off the Tasman. This will be the weather engine for most of the country for balance of the week. Dry and settled weather is expected for everyone except the deep south. That where a weak boundary could unsettle things enough to produce some light precipitation Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

More rain is expected for the North Island tomorrow. Upper and western parts of the South Island could also see more rain tomorrow.
The heaviest of the rain is expected to be confined to the North Island. Taranaki, Waikato, the Central Plateau, Bay of Plenty and Wairarapa could all see heavy rain tomorrow. Government forecaster MetService has warnings up for Mt. Egmont, Taranaki, The Tararua Range, Waitomo, Taumarunui, southern Waikato, the Central Plateau and the eastern ranges of the Bay of Plenty.
Peak rainfall rates of 10 to 15mm/hr are possible for most areas with 20 to 25mm/hr possible on Mt. Ruapehu tomorrow morning.
Brief heavy rain is also possible for Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula during the afternoon tomorrow.
On the South Island, rain should be in the form of light showers. The only exception will be along the southern West Coast and Fiordland where heavy and thundery falls are possible late in the afternoon and into the evening.
A few quick showers are possible about the eastern South Island tomorrow as well. Even in Christchurch where temperatures climbed above 20 under bright sunshine could see a few shower early tomorrow. However, tomorrow afternoon should be settled for Christchurch as well as much of the far eastern SI.
Rain could push into the south-eastern regions of the South Island tomorrow evening.

High moves in but nights shouldn’t be too cold

An anticyclone is approaching from the Tasman Sea ready to move over central and northern areas of New Zealand tomorrow. While it will bring frosty nights for some in sheltered inland areas, they won’t be as bad as the previous frosts that had happened with the last anticyclone.
The reason being is the air masses associated with each high are a bit different, more simply the previous high had colder air associated with it, with low levels of moisture. The high about to move over us isn’t as dominated by cold air, also it is moving more over central and northern areas of New Zealand. In fact the Central North Island and Waikato are looking to get colder nights this time round then Central Otago will, Otago will have a northwesterly airflow over the region while up north winds will be light to calm from Tuesday night through to Thursday night. Later in the week Otago could get frostier nights though as the isobars spread out for a time and calmer conditions settle in.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights could see –2 to –3 in some Central North Island areas, perhaps –1 or –2 on Thursday night. Central Otago looks like receiving a frost tomorrow morning of -2 but for Tuesday and Wednesday nights the mercury should stick above zero.
Auckland should remain frost free this time round, it’ll get a little cool on Wednesday and Thursday mornings but will only get down to 5 degrees at the lowest. Christchurch looks set to remain above zero with this high aswell, during the week 2 or 3 degrees looks to be the lowest temperatures on the cards during the nights, maybe getting a bit cooler on Saturday morning later in the week.

Outlook for the rest of the week

Tomorrow is looking very nice for most. The North Island should have light winds in all areas with mostly sunny skies, morning frosts in inland sheltered areas. Sunny about the top of the South Island and along the east coast with light winds, northwesterlies will be gusty about the Southland coast however. The only hiccup of the day being some cloud along the West Coast and showers south of about Hokitika.
Temperatures should be mild in the afternoon for the east coast of the South Island getting into the mid teens perhaps a little higher. Mid teen high’s across most of the North Island.
Thursday looks mostly like a repeat of Wednesday, winds will be a bit lighter about Southland however and it may be cloudier with the chance of a few showers on the coast. Friday is similar again however Southland should remain dry this time, winds will be light across the South Island. East to northeasterly winds pick up across the North Island with some cloud developing.

Sunny weather across most of the North Island again tomorrow with light winds, perhaps some morning cloud on western coastlines but it should brighten up in the afternoon and there is the chance of some fog in the Waikato towards dawn. Morning frosts are again possible in the Central North Island but won’t be heavy. A little cloud looks like developing about the east coast north of Auckland in the afternoon as winds tend easterly. High’s tomorrow once again around the mid teen mark, a little cooler inland.
Sunny on the east coast of the South Island tomorrow, perhaps some high cloud. Nelson will experience sunny weather and light winds. Dry in Southland with west to northwest breezes, a little cloud at times. Cloudy south of Hokitika with drizzle patches in Fiordland, north of Hokitika there will be sunny breaks and light westerly breezes. High’s around the mid teens for most although a bit cool in Central Otago and along the West Coast.
Now for a hunch I’m wondering if winds could turn to the southwest late afternoon or early evening for Canterbury making temperatures a bit cooler? No doubt it'll be starting to cool down by late afternoon anyway. It may well reach the mid teens before hand but the pressure gradient is developing quite an arc later tomorrow almost akin to an area of low pressure on the east coast.
That happened the other day when Christchurch hit 22.3 degrees in the afternoon, a cool south to southwesterly then came through in the afternoon. I don’t think if it happens it’ll be as bad this time but the wind may tilt to the southwest. Let’s see what happens.

End of the working week tomorrow and how’s it looking?
It is looking very similar to how it has been today however a low in the northern Tasman Sea will start to make it's presence felt for upper areas of the North Island tomorrow.
Easterly breezes north of Auckland, also about the Bay of Plenty and East Cape with sunny areas and some cloud, perhaps a bit cloudier right on the eastern coastline north of Auckland. Easterlies should get a little gusty later in the day about Northland also.
Light winds for the rest of the North Island with a mostly sunny day ahead, fog patches possible again about the Waikato and Central North Island in the morning. Auckland should escape the fog tomorrow morning this time with a bit more breeze puffing through the night.
A very similar result for the South Island tomorrow as it has been today, with light winds for all. Perhaps a bit cloudier on the West Coast with drizzle patches in Fiordland once again, it should remain sunny atleast north of Westport. High cloud again out east with mid teen temperatures north of around Ashburton.
