This Week's Weather Forecasting 2nd to 6th July 2012
« on: July 01, 2012, 11:25:29 PM »
Issued byMetService
Tuesday
North Island, rain reaching most places, heavy falls in the north and for Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. South Island, fine in the west and south, rain in the north, briefly heavy, low cloud and drizzle in the east.

Wednesday
North Island, showers north of a line Taranaki to East Cape, and rain easing or clearing further south. South Island, mostly fine in the west and south, rain in the north and east. Low cloud or fog for inland Otago.

Thursday
Showers over the North Island and for much of the South Island. Fine in the west of South Island.

Friday
Rain or showers over the North Island, and for much of the South Island. Fine about Nelson and along the South Island West Coast.

An Unsettled Week is the forecast from Weather Watch:
A slow moving low pressure system will make for a rainy week.
The Tasman low will affect the northern tip of the country first, with rain chances moving into Northland..
By Tuesday afternoon, rain chances will have spread across much of the North Island with the heaviest rain falling across the upper regions, including Auckland.  There is some concern for heavy rainfall about Northland late Monday into Tuesday…and the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty during the day on Tuesday.  Government forecaster MetService and WeatherWatch.co.nz both feel that these areas have a moderate risk for seeing heavy rain.
The chances for rain will then spread onto the upper regions of the South Island during the afternoon on Tuesday.  Southland and Otago could stay dry on Tuesday.
The low will continue to churn over the Tasman on Wednesday.  But it won’t be in a real hurry to go anywhere.  Despite this, the rain should ease a bit early on Wednesday.
Another round of rain comes in on Thursday.  The rain should be confined to the North Island on Thursday with just a slight chance for showers about the far upper regions of the South Island.  Again it looks like the precipitation chances for Southland and Otago will be pretty small.
Friday will be another rainy day for the NI as the low starts to push across the North Island.  A boundary associated with the low will extend south and bring some chances for rain to the South Island as well.

Heavy rain possible this week
« Reply #2 on: July 02, 2012, 07:42:45 PM »
Parts of New Zealand will be running a risk for heavy rain during the upcoming week.

Tomorrow, WeatherWatch.co.nz and government forecaster MetService agree that there is a moderate risk of heavy rain for Northland, northern Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and the far north-western South Island.  A lesser chance extends to the rest of Auckland, northeast Waikato and eastern Bay of Plenty.  WeatherWatch forecasters believe that Taranaki is also running a moderate risk for heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

As we get into Wednesday, the main focus for the rain shifts south.  They heavy rainfall threat moves to Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.  The threat extends into Thursday as well.

Also on Thursday, Wairarapa could see some heavy rain.  That threat extends into Friday.  However, at this time the threat looks fairly low.

Wet for the upper half of the North Island tomorrow
« Reply #3 on: July 02, 2012, 07:52:21 PM »
The main feature in New Zealand tomorrow will be a front which will work it’s way south over the upper half of the North Island, preceding it will be moist east to northeasterly winds and behind the change the flow tends more westerly. A fair amount of rain is forecast to fall with up to 50 to 60mm possible during the day mainly about the Coromandel and the Western Bay of Plenty, lesser amounts elsewhere.

The West Coast of the South Island should get the pick of the weather again however it’ll be a little breezy from the southeast with some high cloud, that can mean nice temperatures there though so enjoy.

Video: Warmer & wetter for NI, cold remains in SI
« Reply #4 on: July 02, 2012, 07:58:08 PM »
Weather analyst Philip Duncan with nzherald.co.nz bring you the latest on the large Tasman Sea low that's heading towards the North Island and will bring a warmer, wetter week to the island - starting with a band of rain overnight tonight and across Tuesday - then a few days of cloud, showers, patches of rain and even some sun (messy forecast!).

The South Island is on the edge of this low which means cloudy, cooler weather will continue for most regions, but the lower South Island will see some of the sunniest and driest weather, ahead of the next cold snap this weekend.

July suddenly unsettles
« Reply #5 on: July 02, 2012, 08:13:45 PM »
A low out over the Tasman will be our weather-maker for the next several days.

The low will start to rotate a trough of low pressure across the country tomorrow.  As early as tomorrow afternoon, the northern tip of the North Island could start to see some light showers.  By tomorrow evening, those shower chances will move south into Auckland.

By the time Tuesday morning rolls around, almost all of the North Island will be getting wet.

At this time, heavy rain is a possibility.  Government forecaster MetService says Northland, Northern Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua all run the risk of seeing rainfall heavy enough to warrant warnings.  A low risk for heavy rain extends to the rest of Auckland, northeast Waikato and eastern Bay of Plenty.  WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasters agree with MetService, but also feel that Taranaki should be on the lookout for heavy rainfall Tuesday evening.

The low and its associated trough (also sometimes called a boundary) will continue to drift south on Wednesday.  That means rain chances will spread onto parts of the South Island.  The West Coast and Nelson could see some rain.  But other than a few light showers early on Wednesday, the eastern side of the island will probably see very little, if any rain.

Thursday could bring some small rain chances to most of the North Island.  The South Island may see some light rain along the West Coast.  Light rain is possible on the other side of the island as well.  During the night, the rain may change to snow in the higher elevations.

Light rain or snow will continue to be possible for eastern Otago on Friday.  Snow levels will likely stay above 400m.  Some light rain is also possible for Marlborough.  Otherwise, the South Island should be fairly settled.  Much of the North island will still be feeling the effects of the slow-moving Tasman low as it starts to push ashore.  The whole island will see a chance for showers with the best chance being about Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty.

oh great, thanks weather watch :(

The band of rain that gave some torrential downpours in Auckland today will slip a little further south overnight to lie about the eastern North Island area tomorrow, a southeasterly airflow there will bring rain possibly heavy at times to Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and northern areas of Wairarapa before easing at night. Up to 60 to 70mm of rain can be expected in the ranges.
Areas north of Auckland can expect a few isolated showers to move through during the day, a chance one or two may be heavy with light northwesterly winds.
The pick of the weather goes to Westland and Southland tomorrow with sunny weather expected there, some blue cod fishing about Fiordland would do nicely.

Video: Flash floods explained & drier weather coming
« Reply #7 on: July 04, 2012, 10:12:41 PM »
In this evening's weather video Philip Duncan shows more footage from yesterday's flash floods in Auckland and explains why they happened.  We then take a look at the low currently affecting most of the North Island and now eastern parts of the South Island.  And just what is coming to us weatherwise this weekend?  Looks like a southerly flow and much drier skies.

Ridge starting to make headway
« Reply #8 on: July 05, 2012, 07:49:10 PM »
A ridge will start to push onto the South Island tomorrow moving in more settled weather, a southerly airflow over the northeast will bring some cloud however and any remaining drizzle patches about the coast north of Kaikoura will clear at night. Frosty in Otago with sunny skies expected to follow, there may be some cloud at times about the Southland coast. The West Coast again receives sunny weather and light winds.

The North Island’s east coast will still be affected by a persistent southeasterly airflow, rain in the Wairarapa will spread back into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne during the afternoon and evening. Southern Taranaki and the tip of Northland may get affected by showers however most other areas are looking for a sunny day and light southeasterly breezes. Perhaps some morning fog about the Waiakato again however the risk won’t be as bad as it was this morning. The southeasterly airflow eases over the North Island on the weekend as a high starts to muscles it’s way in from the Tasman Sea.

The high at this stage looks to be in control next week through till Thursday bringing mostly settled weather.
