A front moves north over the South Island today bringing heavy rain in the west and brief rain out east. For the North Island still fairly settled under the influence of an anticyclone however some cloud develops in the southwest.

Northland
Mostly sunny with light west to northwest winds, along eastern coastal areas winds tend northeast.
Highs: 20-21

Auckland
Sunny spells with westerly breezes, cloud thickens towards evening especially in the west.
Highss: 19-20

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Mostly sunny with westerly breezes tending northerly in the afternoon about the Bay Of Plenty. A few areas of cloud during the day for the Waikato and Central North Island thickening later in the evening.
Highs: 18-21

Eastern North Island
Sunny, some high cloud develops from morning about Wairarapa and afternoon further north. Northwesterly winds gusty at times about Wairarapa however further north, northwesterlies not arriving till late afternoon or evening at a moderate speed.
Highs: 20-23

Western North Island
Sunny with some increasing high cloud, cloud a bit more frequent about northern Taranaki and Kapiti however with the odd light shower possible at times. Overnight expect most places to see a period of showers as winds change westerly.
High: 17-20

Wellington
Becoming cloudy in the morning, strong northerlies may gust to gale force at times from afternoon. Some brief rain develops overnight then clears before dawn the next morning as a southerly wind shift moves through.
High: 16

Nelson
Skies becoming mostly cloudy in the morning, northerly winds increasing becoming brisk in the afternoon. The odd showers develops in the evening. Winds change southwest overnight with showers clearing.
High: 18

Marlborough
High cloud thickens from morning with northwesterly wind becoming brisk in the morning then strong in the afternooon. Northwesterlies may gust to gale force at times in the afternoon about exposed areas. Winds ease a little later in the evening then overnight expect a southwest change with the risk of a brief shower.
Highs: 21-22

Canterbury
Thick high cloud with strong northwesterly winds developing in the morning, winds may gust to gale force about exposed areas inland (valleys, hill tops, river gorges etc). Some rain spreads into the foothills in the morning also then expect some brief rain for most around midday as winds change south to southwest. Clear spells then develop later in the afternoon with southerlies dying out in the evening.

West Coast
Rain becoming heavy during the morning with gusty north to northwesterly winds, a risk of thunderstorms too. Heavy rain eases to showers in the afternoon with a southwest change. Showers clear in the evening with cloud breaking up.
High: 15

Coastal Otago
Winds change southwest in the morning bringing rain which clears early afternoon, sunny spells then increase with southwesterlies dying out later in the evening.
High: 13

Southland & Central Otago
Morning rain eases to showers, a few of which may be heavy and thundery in the afternoon with hail then clearing by evening, strong westerly winds tend northwest later.
Highs: 12-13
