Heavy rain for the central North Island High Country today

A strong moist westerly flow will bring long periods of rain to the central North Island today. During the evening, a front should cross the area with a burst of intense rain. For the central North Island high country (Taumarunui, the ranges west of Lake Taupo, Tongariro National Park and the headwaters of the Whanganui River), a further 60 to 90mm rain is expected from 8am to midnight today.

People planning outdoor activities in these areas should be aware of heavy rain today and that rivers and streams will rise rapidly.

Further rain is expected throughout Friday. In the 16 hours from 8am Friday to midnight Friday expect a further 60 to 90mm with the heaviest falls about Tongariro National Park. Rainfall rates may briefly reach 20mm per hour this evening. Further heavy showers are expected during Saturday.
