Thursday A low west of the central North Island is expected to fill this morning and a southerly flow gradually spread north over the upper half of the North Island today. Showers can be expected in many places in the westerly flow to the north of the southerly.
There is a diminishing moderate risk that one or two showers may turn briefly thundery this morning in the coastal area from north Taranaki to southwest Auckland. They may be accompanied by locally heavy showers, small hail and wind gusts to 90km/hr. Similar conditions are expected in eastern Bay of Plenty (Whakatane to East Cape) this afternoon. There is an additional general low risk of isolated thunderstorms from southern Northland to north of a line from Mt Taranaki to East Cape through to late afternoon.
Also, a line of heavy showers is expected to move onto the Wanganui/south Taranaki coast this morning. There is a low risk of thunderstorms in this line marking a southerly change.
