FridayA sub-tropical low should move rapidly southeast across the top of the North Island on Sunday. There is a moderate risk of warning amounts of rain over Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty from Saturday night into Sunday morning and a lower risk for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Taupo and the Gisborne ranges.
A front is expected to cross the South Island on Sunday. A burst of heavy rain is expected about the ranges of Westland and Fiordland overnight Saturday to Sunday with a moderate risk of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria. Ahead of the front, there is also a moderate risk of severe gale northwest winds over inland areas of Canterbury, Otago and Southland.
A cold south to southwest airstream is expected to spread over the South Island on Monday and the North Island on Tuesday. Snow showers may fall to sea-level in Southland and Otago and low levels on the hills in Canterbury. There is a low risk amounts may reach warning levels in the hills of Southland and Otago. Winds are likely to reach gale force in exposed places with significant wind-chill.
