North Island, rain in most places, heavy falls over the northern half. South Island, fine apart from cloudy periods with morning and evening drizzle in the east.

The remnants of Evan still appear headed for a Christmas Eve rendezvous with the North Island, with the effects being felt as early as Saturday in the northern and eastern areas.
 
By the time things wind down on Tuesday, just about every part of the North Island will have felt at least some effect from Evan.
 
Here's how things break down, based on the current model data;
 
First, as of this morning, Evan is no longer a tropical cyclone. However, it is still a potent low packed with moisture and enough energy generate some strong winds.
 
WeatherWatch.co.nz Forecaster Howard Joseph says by Saturday evening, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, East Cape and Gisborne should all be seeing rain. Some of it could be heavy at times. Winds will also be picking up in strength and could near gale force. Mr Joseph says "Severe gale force winds do not appear to be likely, but the threat can’t be completely ruled out."
 
Evan looks more of a rain event for NZ.
 
As the remnants of Evan gets closer, more rain is expected for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, East Cape and Gisborne on Sunday. There is a good possibility for heavy rain for the East Cape and Gisborne Sunday evening. Moderate to strong winds are expected for the eastern North Island from Gisborne, north to the upper tip of the island. Winds could again approach gale force.
 
Rain is also expected to fall on Hawke’s Bay, Auckland and Waikato on Sunday.
 
On Monday morning, the centre of the low is expected to move west across the tip of the North Island. Rain, some possibly heavy, and moderate to strong winds will likely affect most of the North Island. Most of the rain will affect the northern half of the island. The strong winds will likely affect Northland and Auckland. There is a pretty good chance for winds to approach gale force. Severe gales are possible but only a low risk.
 
On Christmas Day, the low will continue its slow westward track out over the Tasman Sea as it continues to unravel and fall apart Expect a showery day for most of the North Island and possibly even the upper South Island with windy conditions for some too.

Mr Joseph cautions that there is still a chance that low could end up taking a different track, in which case the wind and rain forecasts will need to be adjusted. But he adds that WeatherWatch.co.nz will continue to keep a close eye on the remnants of Evan and will provide updates as conditions warrant.

CHRISTMAS DAY FORECAST
 *Please note, Ex-Cyclone Evan continues to muddy forecasts a bit due to the unpredictable nature of tropical storms.
 
Our confidence of a very settled Christmas Day would be much higher if Evan wasn't in the picture!
 
The highest of the high temperatures are expected to be mostly through inland areas and in the upper North Island where humidity levels could be above 90% during the day - ie, muggy.
 
Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Central North Island and BOP
 Early rain for some, otherwise showers or drizzle patches, with long dry spells possible too. Very humid north to north east breezes. *Please note the centre of ex-cyclone Evan will pass directly over, or very near, the Far North on Christmas Eve. This means there is still significant uncertainty about where the heaviest rain will fall so please check back for updates.
 (40 to 80% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 23-27
 
East of the North Island
 Fairly cloudy especially in the north. Humid northeasterly breezes. Early rain possible about the Gisborne ranges. Some drizzle possible in the morning.
 (30 to 60% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 25-27
 
Western North Island
 Cloudy areas and perhaps some brief sun - especially in the south, Warm, northeasterly breezes. Chance of an afternoon shower especially in inland areas. Quite humid.
 (20-40% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 25-29
 
Wellington
 Any morning cloud with possible showers/drizzle clearing then becoming fairly sunny. Warm northerly breezes.
 (20% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 24-27
 
Nelson
 Sunny areas and some cloud, mostly dry although chance of a brief afternoon shower especially about inland hills and ranges. Humid and warm north to northeasterly breezes. Later in the evening some rain may set in due to Evan.
 (25% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 26-28
 
Marlborough and Canterbury
 Some morning cloud then becoming mostly sunny, winds mostly light tending northeasterly along the coast. Humid and warm. Inland areas verging on hot temperatures in the low 30’s where there may be a few late afternoon showers, mainly in inland Marlborough.
 (10% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 27-31
 
West Coast
 Sunny areas and some cloud with humid northeasterlies, about and north of Buller there may be the odd shower otherwise mostly dry and warm.
 (30% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 24-28, the higher temperatures will be in sheltered inland parts, like inland Buller.
 
Southland & Otago
Sunny weather looks to be on the cards with any coastal morning cloud clearing, winds will be light tending northeasterly along the coast. Some high cloud later in the day. Overnight southwesterlies develop with showers.
 (10% chance of precipitation)
 Highs: 26-28, low to mid 30’s in inland areas. Dunedin may have a northeasterly breeze for most of the day keeping temperatures at 23 or 24 degrees.

A warm Sunday on both sides of the ditch

Daytime highs will be flirting with 30 tomorrow in Auckland and Hamilton. In fact, many places on the western half of the North Island could wind up in the mid and upper 20s tomorrow. On the east side Tauranga, Gisborne and Napier could've made a run for the 30 degree mark tomorrow if it wasn't for the clouds and rain that are expected. That will keep temps a bit cooler with highs in the lower 20s.

Mainland locations are likely to see highs in the low to mid 20s.

On the other side of the ditch, it will be a hot one for parts of eastern and southern Australia. But the heat is not going to last long.

According to a story on Weatherzone.com.au,the heat which has building over the interior of WA will move across to SA and VIC, bringing with it high temperatures on Sunday.

Adelaide will see temperatures pushing to 39 degrees on Sunday, which is about 12 degrees above average for December. The northerly winds that will be transporting the hot airmass into southern Australia will also be very dry, leading to increased fire dangers.

Sunday temperatures in Melbourne will also reach into the high thirties. The city is forecast to reach 39 degrees, which will make it the hottest day of the month so far.

Relief from the heat for coastal SA will arrive later on Sunday with a cool southwesterly change, bringing the temperature down for Christmas. Temperatures will return to normal for Adelaide, around 26 degrees on Monday. On Christmas Day, the temperature will also sit in the mid twenties with mostly sunny skies.

For Melbourne, the cool change will arrive early on Monday morning. This will bring a few showers early on Christmas Eve with temperatures only reaching into the mid twenties. For Christmas Day in Melbourne, cool southerly winds will hold the temperature in the low twenties, but showers will clear to mostly sunny skies.

It will be a great day to head to the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne as skies remain clear and temperatures reach the mid twenties.
