Saturday
North Island, a few showers in the north and fine elsewhere. South Island, cloudy in the west with some drizzle in Fiordland and Westland, fine elsewhere.

Sunday
North Island, cloudy periods in the north, and mostly fine elsewhere. South Island, cloudy in the west with rain in Fiordland and Westland, high cloud in the south with some rain later, mostly fine elsewhere.

Chatham Islands
On Friday and Saturday, fresh southwesterlies and cloudy periods. Sunday brings increasing fine spells and wind turning northwesterly.

Philip Duncan and nzherald.co.nz bring you the latest forecast for the weekend - with a big high over the nation we can expect mostly dry, mostly calm, weather.
 
However the high is departing and western and northern New Zealand will be the first to see the changing conditions later in the weekend and heading in to the start of next week.

Indeed this weekend’s weather will be dominated by a fairly beefy anticyclone sitting just east of the country, with a centre at 1032 to 1034 hectopascals. Generally speaking we are in for settled weather and for the most part Saturday and Sunday will sing the same tune weather wise.
 
It will be sunny in most regions with a northeasterly airflow, there may be some cloud at times particularly morning and night along eastern coastlines. Northland will receive a higher chance of cloud with a slightly fresher easterly airflow there, there is even the chance of the odd shower at times in the east. In South Westland and Fiordland there will be cloudy areas and in Fiordland a few drizzle patches or showers now and again, Saturday may be a little brighter though in South Westland.
 
During the afternoons and evenings there is a chance of a few isolated afternoon showers mainly about Southland and Central Otago but possibly near the ranges up through the centre of the South Island also.
 
A chance of light frosts during the nights in inland areas of both Islands and near the coast in the east where skies are cloud free and the northeasterly breeze drops out.
 
Perhaps not time to crack the barbeque open just yet as the evenings will be a little cool still but then again I have them in winter as you just can’t beat a bbq.

If you liked today, you will love tomorrow.

We are looking at a very similar set up tomorrow across the country.  Dry and settled weather almost everywhere with the exception of the top and bottom of the country.  Northland is likely to start the day with some sun.  Clouds should spread back in before noon and the a few showers could move in from mid-afternoon.

On the opposite side of the country, a few showers may dot the deep south early in the day and then clear during the afternoon.

For the rest of the country, except a fairly sunny start to the day.  A few clouds should bubble up in the afternoon over the northern half of the North Island.  As mentioned earlier, precipitation will make its way into Northland during the afternoon.

South Island, apart from the previously mentioned deep south, is like dry and settled.

Temperatures across the country should top out in the 14-18 degree range.
