Forecast in Brief for Monday the 9th July 2018



Severe Weather Warnings and Watches are in force for much of New Zealand.

An active front is forecast to move eastwards across New Zealand tonight (Sunday), preceded by a period of heavy rain and gale north to northwest winds for many places, then followed by a strong and unsettled westerly flow into Monday.

Heavy Rain Warnings are in force for Westland, Buller, Nelson and the north and west of Marlborough, also for the Tararua Range, the eastern ranges of Bay of Plenty and the ranges of Gisborne. Note, heavy rain about Mount Taranaki has now eased but further periods of heavy rain is expected from overnight tonight until Monday afternoon and a Watch is place.

In addition, Strong Wind Warnings are in force for the Canterbury High Country until early Monday morning but has been lifted for inland Marlborough and the Sounds, Wellington, southern Wairarapa, also Taranaki, Whanganui and Taihape.


Northland to Wellington, including Bay of Plenty and the central high country
Rain, sometimes heavy, turning to showers tomorrow morning, some of which could be heavy and thundery. Northwest gales, easing later tomorrow.

Gisborne to Wairarapa
Scattered rain tonight, heavy about the ranges, then showers tomorrow. Northwest gales, easing later tomorrow.

Marlborough and Nelson
Rain with heavy falls, clearing tomorrow evening. Northwest gales in exposed places.

Buller to Fiordland
Rain, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, clearing south of Haast tomorrow evening. Gale northerlies changing strong southwest tomorrow.

Canterbury
High cloud, with showers about the high country. Northwest gales inland, easing tomorrow.

Otago, Southland
Mainly fine tonight. Showers tomorrow.

Chatham Islands
Cloudy, with a few showers tomorrow.
