RECORD-BREAKING COLD SWEEPS EUROPE
Winter-like lows have been sweeping across Europe of late, and have frozen migrants to death on the Poland-Belarus border, in the month of September!

Recent nights have seen the mercury plunge to record-breaking levels across European nations.

Eastern Europe has been seeing sub-freezing lows — for example, Berovo in North Macedonia (2,700ft) suffered -1.8C (28.7F).

While in the southeast, unprecedented September lows of -1C (30.2F) and +1C (33.8F) have been logged in Greece, at Florina (2,132ft) and Kastoria (2,165ft), respectively.

Snow is also rolling in early.

Heavy, early-season snow arrived Tuesday evening in the Italian ski resort of Livigno, and it hasn’t let up.

Totals of approximately 2 meters (6.6 feet) have accumulated on the peaks of “Little Tibet”, with the latest weather models suggesting further historic early-November dumpings are on the way.

"The month of July will very likely be the driest July ever recorded since 1959," spokesman Christian Veil from Meteo-France told AFP.

On average, just eight mm (0.3 inches) of rain fell across the country from July 1-25, less than the previous low of 16 mm which was clocked in 2020, he said.

"We're in a very difficult situation even though we're only at the end of July," he said, saying soil humidity was at record lows and many trees were losing their leaves prematurely.

Farmers across the country are reporting difficulties in feeding livestock because of parched grasslands, while irrigation has been banned in large areas of northwest and southeast France due to water shortages.

The flow of the river Loire for example, which empties into the Atlantic in northwest France, has fallen by a quarter since the start of July.

On the eastern river Rhine, which forms the France-Germany border, commercial boats are having to run at a third of their carrying capacity in order to avoid hitting the bottom because the water level is so low.

A total of 90 out of 96 administrative regions in mainland France have water restrictions of some sort, a record number, according to the environment ministry.

The Loire Valley is known as "the Garden of France". But the garden is withering.

France's worst drought since records began has turned lush vegetation into arid fields of brown crops, shrivelling under what is now the fourth heatwave of the year.

In Vincent Favreau's vegetable farm, where he produces food for a hundred families in the area, the parched earth has stunted the growth of the cabbages. His potato plants are burnt out, producing just half the crop of a normal year.

"Either the vegetables will die of thirst, or they won't develop enough during this crucial period of growth," he said, sifting through the dry soil, which he hasn't been able to water since restrictions came in two weeks ago.

"With this heat and wind, we can't compensate for what the sun is evaporating. I've never seen something like this in my twenty-two years here. If it doesn't rain within two months, it'll be a disaster."

The world is already suffering from a food crisis from the war in Ukraine, a global breadbasket. Now, other major food producers, like France, are showing worrying signs.

Its corn production is forecast to drop by some 18% this year, with wheat and animal feed also falling.

Europe is contending with a record-breaking bout of late-summer chills — a freeze that the bought-out legacy media couldn’t give two hoots about (quelle surprise!).

September frosts swept the plains of Central France over the weekend — ground frosts as well as air frosts (below 2m).

Monthly low temperature records have been set, including at Brest, although many of these new benchmarks won’t officially stand due to a change of location at the stations.

Europe’s well-documented summer of toasty African plumes seems a distant memory as many nations now find themselves ‘above’ an increasingly weak and wavy ‘meridional‘ jet stream flow and therefor subject to frosty Arctic outbreaks.

A pair of low temperature records were recently busted at Capanna Margherita in Monte Rosa, Italy –adding to the many that fell across Italy and France over the weekend, as reported here— a weather station that was opened way back in 1899.

The mercury plunged to -21.2C (-6.2F) during the morning of Sept 17, which busted both the coldest-ever temp for the day (the -19.7C (-3.5F) set in 2013) and the date for the earliest sub -20C (-4F) in history, by a full week no less (Sept 24, 2004).

Brutal Arctic air is readying to invade much of the European continent.

Record lows and historic snows are potentially on the cards as a ‘blocking high’ above Greenland threatens to set up a truly baltic-looking festive season, particularly for Northern, Western and Central nations — starting this week:

The heaviest snows will arrive in line with a late-March polar plunge, due to bring temperature anomalous of as much as -16C below the seasonal norm to Sweden and Norway, for example:

While speculating further ahead, the British tabloids are getting excited about new long-term weather models that predict “a record cold Easter” this year, prompting bookmakers to slash their odds on Easter being the chillest ever.

This remains to be seen, and if you know the UK tabloid rhetoric, it usually proves complete and utter bollocks. But still, “weather warnings across the UK suggest we’re already well on course for a record-breaking cold Easter,” so says Alex Apati of Ladbrokes, and Met Office reports do show the vast majority of the country being hit by an extreme cold spell come April 9.

Temperatures as low was -8C (17.6F) are scheduled to hit the Scottish Highlands, once again — record lows for the time of year.

A harsh wintry outbreak is gripping Europe this week, bringing harsh frosts and heavy April snowfall.

Temperatures across the likes of France have plummeted below freezing; practically all of the country has been affected, even the Mediterranean.

The dramatic shift in conditions, ‘the return to winter’, will bring widespread losses to France’s agricultural sectors. Optimistic estimates, made by agro-climatologist Serge Zaka, call for 30% of blooming fruit trees to be destroyed.

The anomalous warmth that hit at the end of March coupled with this week’s hard freeze is making it difficult for crops to grow stably, with the erratic shifts in temperature and environment resulting in stunted growth: swing between extremes.

Temperatures touching -7C (19.4F) swept many French regions overnight Tuesday, with the majority of thermometers reading below 0C (32F). Daytime temperatures will rise in the warming April sun, but it will still hold far-colder than the seasonal norm.

Likewise in Germany and Italy, clear skies are seeing temperatures plummet even further, with damaging frosts hitting here, too.

This late-season freeze recalls memories of the past two years when cold records were slain across Central Europe. ‘Frost fires’ (aka ‘crop candles’) became a regular feature on the continent during the Aprils of 2021 and 2022, with said fires capable of increasing the surrounding temperatures by as much as 3C–but at a cost: €2,000-€3,000 per hectare.

Europe’s return to winter is biting hard.

For the fourth year in a row now, harsh April frosts have been tearing across the continent’s growing regions.

Taking Spain, a string of low temperature records for the month were taken out Wednesday, including the -4.5C (23.9F) Vitoria and the exceptional -6.6C (20.1F) in Burgos – never before has Spain been so cold in April.

The low elevations of Poland were also shivering, posting a low of -7C (19.4F); Italy saw -4.9C (23.3F); France, too, felled long-standing records; while in Austria, all–that’s 100%–of the country’s stations fell below 0C (32F) on Wednesday — the first time that’s happened in April since 2003.

Incredibly, meteorologists are calling for colder temperatures today (Thursday). And looking further ahead--admittedly into the unreliable time frame–latest GFS runs foresee a potentially disruptive Arctic Outbreak descending into the continent April 19, which, if it were to play out, would cause untold headaches for Europe’s farmers, and the lighting of many a ‘frost fire’.

RECORD COLD EUROPE
Northern and Eastern Europe’s cold is persisting, intensifying in some spots.

Frosts have been commonplace this month, with record low temperatures hitting many nations.

Over the weekend, Estonia set a new record low for the month of June. The -1.5C (29.3F) posted Sunday morning at the city of Narva comfortably bested the previous coldest-ever June reading of -0.9C set in 1982.

Daily cold records have also swept the country of late, as a pool of Arctic air refuses to abate.

This part of the world is coming off a cool May, and all.

May in Slovakia was a colder-than-average month, with averages of -1.1C below the norm logged in parts.

May in the Czech Republic was similarly chilly, closing with an average temperature of 12.6C (54.7F), which is 0.5C below the multidecadal average.




June’s chill has impacted many northern and eastern European nations, including Finland, Latvia and Russia.

The summer of 2023 is holding cool for the majority of Europe, and the data prove it.

Temperature readings for July are in, and they show a colder-than-average month for many nations.

Including…

Estonia, with its average temperature of 16.6C (61.9F), which is 1.2C below the multidecadal norm.

Latvia, too, posted a similar average — 16.8C (62.2F), which is a full 1C below the average.

July 2023 in Lithuania finished with an average temperature of 17.6C (63.7F), which is 0.7C below normal.

Denmark closed July with an average temperature of 15.9C (60.6F), which again is a full 1C below the multidecadal average. Also, with precipitation at 140.8mm (5.54 inches) it was the country’s wettest July on record (average is 60.9mm/2.4 inches):

July in Iceland was very cold, particularly in the NE where anomalies of -2C were posted.

Finland also held cool last month, logging anomalies of between -0.3C to -1.9C across the country.

Ignoring the MSM’s cherry-picked warm-mongering, Europe, on the whole and thus far, has suffered an anomalously-cool summer — one now persisting into August, and all:

All of this anomalous cold has resulted in heavy summer snow accumulating across the continent’s higher elevations, which has been the case for weeks now.

Additional dumpings pounded the likes of Italy and Spain over the weekend just gone, “an atypical phenomenon,” so reports Italian news outlet leggo.it.

“The abrupt drop in temperatures,” Leggo continues, “brought heavy snow to the Dolomites. This morning, Saturday 5 August, the completely whitewashed peak of the Civetta is clearly visible from the Val di Zoldo. An intense snowfall that has led many to think, ‘are we on August 5th or December 5th?'”.

Much of the European continent continues to endure anomalous and record-breaking summer chills. Today we’ll focus on Italy—an MSM favorite earlier in the season when the country experienced a short-lived heatwave.

For the past few weeks the mercury has held well-below average across Italy, with rare and heavy summer snow accumulating over the nation’s higher elevations, including the Dolomites.

Yesterday (Aug , a string of monthly low temperature records fell across the country, including in Sardinia.

Here, a new summer low of 14.2C (57.6F) was posted at Capo Frasca, with historic and near-freezing readings observed at the island’s interior, such as the 0.9C (33.6F) at Ilorai, 1.8C (35.2F) at Gavoi and 2.7C (36.9F) at Villanova — all new August lows.

Just a few weeks after heavy rain caused devastating floods in the southern Austrian provinces of Carinthia and Styria, extreme weather is causing major problems once again.

Experts at Geosphere Austria (formerly the ZAMG) issued a rain and thunderstorm warning for several regions across the country on Monday.

In a tweet they said "large amounts of rain" was forecast in the west and south until Tuesday, and warned that "more mudslides and floods" are to be expected.

The regions of Vorarlberg and Tyrol were most affected.

In Tyrol, the districts of Imst, and the Ötztal valley, as well as the district of Innsbruck-Land were mainly affected around Monday lunchtime due to flooding. According to Geosphere, the situation on the main ridge of the Alps remained precarious in the afternoon, and possible thunderstorms could exacerbate the situation.

Recently, ski resorts from the French Alps right the way down to the Italian Dolomites have been reporting more than 3 feet of fresh powder, resulting in a historically-early start to the the European ski season.

Absurd notions that Europe’s favorite winter pastime is a thing of the past have taken a hit after temperatures across the region fell off a cliff in November, back to “a crisp 1990s sort of climate,” reports goodnewsnetwork.org.

In many parts parts of the Alps, snow totals have actually exceeded 6 feet which has led big-name resorts in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria bringing their opening dates of the 2023-24 season forward by at least a week, to November 18.

Resorts such as Tignes and Val Thorens in France, Passo del Tonale, Temu, and Madonna di Campiglio in Italy, Kitzbühel in Austria, and Davos, Zermatt, and Verbier in Switzerland are all opening early–with the latter opening three weeks early.

“Storms have been piling into the Alps for the last two weeks, with snow accumulations of more than 1 meter [3.3ft] quite widespread now on the upper slopes,” said Ian McIlrath, managing director of Ski Solutions holiday company.

“This will ensure a solid base for the winter ahead, and with a lot more snow in the forecast, it’s shaping up to be one of the best starts to the winter ski season that I can remember.”

As the winter season of 2023-2024 takes hold, Europe finds itself in the grip of a severe cold snap. Record-breaking snowfalls and extreme cold temperatures are impacting various regions, from Germany to Russia. Munich, a city known for its picturesque winters, recently experienced a historic snowstorm, delivering an unprecedented 17 inches of snow. Snowfall Warnings Issues Across Europe
The beginning of March is looking set to be a snowy one for much of Europe.

From Scandinavia through the UK over the Alps and well into Spain, heavy snowfall will be the early-spring theme:

As a result of the fresh accumulations, which are forecast to top 10 feet on the peaks, the avalanche danger will be high, particularly across the Alps' Western slopes, as well as over Italy's Apennines and Spain's Pyrenees.

Meteorologist Edoardo Ferrara has said: "In Piedmont and Aosta Valley [in the Alps] up to 1 meter [3.3 feet] of further fresh snow is expected... By Sunday, the total accumulations on the Alps could exceed 3 meters [10 feet]."

Ferrara confirms the high avalanche danger, which he expects to run well-into next week. He speaks to a deadly avalanche that already struck Italy's South Tyrol on Wednesday, that claimed a life, and worries that this is just the beginning.

Europe has endured a violent swing between extremes this month.

"April 2024 will go down as one of the most incredible flips on record ... Summer to winter for some," so say the experts.

Following a spell of anomalous spring warmth, exceptional cold is now striking the likes of Italy where dozens of low temperature records have fallen (for the time of year).

Italians have been enduring some of the coldest daily highs in books dating back 100+ years, to 1873. And even at low elevations, Tmaxes have struggled to 7C (44.6F).

"Absolutely historic," writes @extremetemps on X.

In France, the southern city of Nice, with 4.4C (39.9F), has set it lowest late-April temperature since 1951. Technically that's true, but that 1951 reading was actually set at night. Monday's 4.4C occurred during the day which, according to researchers, "probably hasn't happened [in the French Riviera] since the Little Ice Age."

Similarly in Denmark's capital Copenhagen, a very cold day was endured there. "When the final numbers are in it may turn out to have been the second-coldest day in 250 years this late in the spring," writes local weather researcher Sebastian Pelt (certainly the coldest since 1941). Elsewhere, Jægersborg's 2.7C (36.9F) made for Denmark's lowest daily max this late since 1988.

Tryvannshøgda, Norway posted -4.4C (24.1F) overnight Monday, the lowest temperature so late in spring since 1973.
