The pre-monsoon heat increase in India and Pakistan is breaking records again. In Jacobabad, Sindh Province in central Pakistan, the temperature was recorded as 51.1 degrees celsius on June 1. This equals the standing record for June and is 7 degrees above average.

In the adjacent Indian state of Rajasthan, the northernmost city of Ganganagar has been flirting with 50C for several days. It holds a record maximum temperature of 50C and an average for June of 41.5C.

Gujarat is gearing up for heavy to extremely heavy rains as Very Severe Cyclonic storm Vayu is nearing the coast. The system is presently centered at Latitude 18°N and Longitude 70.3°E, 230 km west­-southwest of Mumbai and 290 km nearly south of Veraval.

Cyclone Vayu is the first cyclone to hit the Gujarat coast in the last one decade.

It may have taken a while—four decades as some reports claim—but it finally snowed in parts of Indian state of Nagaland last week, turning the region into a winter wonderland. The rolling green mountains and meadows in the districts of Zunheboto, Kiphire, Phek and Tuensang were blanketed in fresh powder due to a biting cold wave in northeast India.

Snow is uncommon in Nagaland. At this time of the year, the temperature usually drops to 10-11°C, but last week, the temperature dropped to 2-3°C. Several other parts of the northeast are also experiencing extreme cold conditions.

Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh on Monday was the most frigid city in the northeast on Monday at a temperature of 2.9°C. The conditions were similar in Imphal in Manipur, while Shillong reported a low of 5°C.

It’s not just the northeast. Delhi reported its lowest temperature last week in nearly six years at a temperature of 1.4°C.

Winter has knocked in North India including Delhi. Scientists from the Meteorological Department of India (IMD) said the national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 12.5C on Thursday.

According to IMD, the normal minimum temperature at this time of the year is 15–16C. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD’s regional forecasting center, said the last low temperature in Delhi in October was recorded in 1994.

On October 31, 1994, the city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 12.3C. On October 31, 1937, the city recorded its lowest temperature of the month – 9.4C.

The minimum temperature is likely to be around 12 ° C in the next two-three days.

IMD scientist said that the minimum temperature is likely to fall to 11C in Delhi by 1 November.

Heavy snow continued in northern India yesterday, Nov. 26, as southern regions continued to register anomalous, often record-breaking cold.


As originally reported by sify.com, the city of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh was greeted with a fresh spell of snow and sub-zero temperatures on Thursday, November 26 (see featured image), with Keylong district clocking the northern state’s lowest temperature, a nippy -2.6C (27.3F).

District authorities have now commenced snow-clearing operations at the Kharapathar-Shimla highway as drifts totaling many feet blocked key passes.

With the Tauktae cyclone expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in nine districts in Kerala on Saturday. Heavy rain has been lashing Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts from Friday evening.

The districts may receive more than 20 cm rainfall in 24 hours. Meanwhile, the sea continue to be very rough and huge tidal waves are battering the coastal hamlets displacing hundreds of families. The stormy weather is expected to continue till Sunday evening.

The water level is rising in rivers and the Central Water Commission has issued a flood alert on the banks of Manimala and Achankovil rivers.

India’s capital city Delhi usually experiences scorching temperatures in May.

Yesterday, however, a high of just 23.8C (74.8F) was registered — the city’s coldest May reading since 1951, and one some 16 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average.

The recent rains have also been record-breaking.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the previous 24-hour rainfall record for the month of May was the 60mm received back on May 24, 1976. But Wednesday, May 19, 2021 just busted that benchmark.

India has been breaking low temperature records left, right and center this year; in fact, since August, 2020 the nation’s capital, Delhi has busted at least one major weather record each and every month.

In October last year, Delhi broke a 58-year-old record, clocking a mean minimum temperature of 17.2C (63F):




November broke an even older record, with the month’s mean minimum temperature dropping to 10.2C (50F), a level last seen in 1949:



December witnessed 8 so-called ‘cold wave days,’ the highest since 1965.

The final month of 2020 also went down as the second-coldest since 1901, and contained its coldest December day since records began more than a century ago:

And just last month, Delhi experienced its coldest May day in 70 years, when a high of just 23.8C (74.8F) was registered on May 19 — a reading that went down as the city’s coldest May day since 1951, and one some 16C below the seasonal average:

With a reading of 17.9C (64.2F) on Tuesday, Delhi has just logged its lowest minimum temperature in June in recorded history, and extended the record-setting streak of toppling monthly weather records.




According to data from India’s Meteorological Department (IMD), the previous lowest minimum temperature recorded in Delhi in June was the 18C (64F) set on June 17, 2006.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD’s regional weather forecasting center, said that the extreme cold weather records of recent months were due to fewer western disturbances passing over Delhi.

“Last winter, we recorded lower than usual temperatures because of fewer western disturbance activities in the region. Usually, in the months of October, November, December and January, we get around five to six active western disturbances each month — last year we only got two to three,” Srivastava said.

Floods in Himachal Pradesh, India, July 2021.
Days of heavy monsoon rainfall has triggered flooding and several landslides in northern India, affecting the states of Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Rescuers have recovered 6 bodies after landslides in Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh on 12 July 2021. More people are thought to be missing and search and rescue operations are ongoing. Teams from India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to affected areas. Eighty people were rescued from a landslide in Triund, Kangra District.

Meanwhile flooding from the Manjhi River has caused severe damage in the popular tourist destination of Dharamshala City. India's National Emergency Response Centre (NERC) reported 28 homes destroyed and 12 damaged across the state.

Meanwhile in the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand, landslides blocked roads around Chamoli, while 3 members of a family were killed when their house collapsed during a landslide in Bageshwar on 11 July.

Massive rescue efforts are underway after heavy monsoon rainfall continues to wreak havoc in Mumbai and surrounding areas of the state of Maharashtra in India. Some areas in Maharashtra recorded more than 1,000 mm of rain in 48 hours.

In Mumbai, heavy rain caused a building to collapse in the Govandi area early on 23 July 2021. Rescue operations are ongoing but media reports suggest 7 people have died and 3 injured. Just last week at least 20 people died in similar circumstances after several homes were destroyed in the Mumbai suburbs of Chembur and Vikhroli as a result of the heavy rain and landslides on 18 July.

Wider areas of Maharashtra state have been severely affected, resulting in massive rescue operations across several districts. Hundreds of people have been rescued so far, with many more still in need of help.

India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed teams to the districts of Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Raigad, Nizamabad, Satara, Sangli, Thane and Palghar. Units of the Coast Guard, Indian Navy and the Indian Army have joined the rescue and relief efforts in several areas, notably in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts.

The Indian Air Force has also undertaken rescue efforts using helicopters in Chiplun in Ratnagiri, where flood waters are so high residents have taken refuge on the roofs of houses.

During the flood season, lasting from June 1 to Aug. 31, the average precipitation of China's capital reached 627.4 mm, approximately 70 percent more than that of the same period in ordinary years.

In 2021, Beijing has also experienced the rainiest July since 1951, as measured by average precipitation of 400.4 mm.
