A large low is expected to deepen over the Tasman Sea on Sunday, then approach the country on Monday. There is some uncertainty about the position and movement of this low during the week, but at this stage, the low is expected to spread northerly rain over the country during Monday, Tuesday and early Wednesday. There is a moderate confidence of short duration heavy rain about Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula during Monday, with a low confidence about Fiordland and southern Westland. On Tuesday, there is a moderate confidence of heavy rain about most North Island areas from Taranaki to Bay of Plenty northwards, including Nelson, Buller and the Marlborough Sounds, this extends through to Wednesday for places south of Auckland, with a high confidence about the Bay of Plenty.

The flow tends southerly over the South Island during late Tuesday and Wednesday as the low begins to cross the country. The southerlies then spread over the lower North Island on Thursday. There is a moderate confidence of heavy snow above 300 metres about Southland, Otago, and parts of south Canterbury from Wednesday to Thursday, with significant rainfall accumulations possible about sensitive parts of eastern Otago below this level.
