Forecast in Brief for Monday 1st of Spring 2014

A front is expected to move slowly south over the North Island  Monday. Moist easterly gales precede this front bringing bursts of heavy rain to parts of the upper North Island.

A warning for heavy rain is in force for Northland and the Coromandel Peninsula.

This watch is for the possibility that rainfall amounts could reach warning criteria, for example 75mm in 15 hours, about northern parts of Auckland, north of Orewa through Monday morning. Also for Gisborne from early Monday morning until early Tuesday morning.

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula
Rain, with some heavy falls. Easterly gales, gusting 100 km/h in exposed places. Rain easing to showers Monday morning, and winds easing.

Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taupo, Bay of Plenty
Mostly fine with high cloud at first, however scattered rain developing overnight. Rain clearing Monday afternoon.

Taranaki to Wellington, including Taihape
Mostly fine, but rain developing in Taihape during Monday.

Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa
Scattered showers, turning to rain north of Wairarapa Monday, with some heavy falls about the Gisborne ranges.

Marlborough, also the Canterbury coast and Plains
Long fine spells, but cloudy morning and night, with patchy drizzle in Marlborough.

The remainder of the South Island
Fine, apart from areas of low cloud or fog morning and night.

The Chatham Islands
Often cloudy.
