A low pressure system is forecast to move eastwards across the central North Island this afternoon, while temperatures remain cold in the upper atmosphere. There is a moderate risk of SEVERE THUNDESTORMS over Taupo, inland Bay of Plenty, south Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay this afternoon. These thundestorms may be slow moving, and produce localised downpours of 25 to 40mm/hr. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
