A southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, strong about the North Island. Showers will affect many areas but will start to clear in the far south of the South Island this morning then further north this evening or overnight.

Northland
Showers move through now and then with strong southwesterlies. Showers clear in the evening.

Central North Island, Waikato & Auckland
Showers. Heavy at times about Auckland, Waikato and western parts of the Central North Island. Strong gusty southwesterly winds ease later in the day. Sunny spells sneak through at times.
Highs: 11-14

Bay Of Plenty
Sunny spells with brisk westerlies, chance of a shower otherwise mainly dry.
High: 15

Eastern North Island
Showers at times, especially about Wairarapa. Gusty southwesterlies.
Highs: 13-14

Western North Island
Showers with gusty southwesterlies, showers ease in the evening with winds easing too.
Highs: 11-13

Wellington
Showers ease, clearing evening. Strong southerly winds.
Highs: 11-12

Nelson
Cloudy to start with the risk of a shower, sunny spells develop in the afternoon. Southwest breezes.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough
Cloudy skies with light southwesterlies, there is the chance of a morning shower.
High: 13

Canterbury
Showers clear this afternoon, a few clear spells develop later in the day. Southwest breezes ease at night.

West Coast
Cloudy spells with southwest breezes, chance of a shower now and then north of Greymouth otherwise mainly dry.

Coastal Otago
Showers clearing around midday, there may be a few spits continue into the afternoon but overall conditions ease. A few sunny spells develop late afternoon with southwest breezes easing.

Morning cloudy areas then breaking to sunshine in the afternoon, light winds.

Southland
The odd shower clearing this morning, sunny spells develop in the afternoon. Light west to northwest breezes.

Possibility of severe gales in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula today, and heavy rain in Buller, Westland and Fiordland on Tuesday.

Southwesterly gales over Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula may gust over 100 km/h in exposed places today, easing this evening.

A fast moving front is expected to move east across the South Island Tuesday afternoon and evening. This is likely to be accompanied by a brief burst of heavy rain in Buller, Westland and Fiordland. Short term accumulations during Tuesday afternoon and evening may approach warning criteria, for example, 50mm in 6 hours.
