Upper North Island
Areas of rain over Northland with southeasterly breezes, some falls may be heavy at times. About Auckland, Waikato and Bay Of Plenty expect mostly sunny weather with some cloud, afternoon sea breezes in coastal areas. Low risk of an isolated shower about Waikato and inland Bay Of Plenty later in the afternoon and evening. Cloudy and sunny periods in Gisborne, northeasterly breezes from midday.
HIGHS: 17-18 in Northland, 19-22 elsewhere.
Lower North Island
Mostly sunny in all areas today with light winds and afternoon sea breezes, there may be areas of cloud morning and night particularly on the east coast. About the central high country a few isolated showers develop later in the afternoon, there is a low chance the one or two of those showers could become heavy and thundery then clearing at night.
HIGHS: Temperatures in the high teens for most. Low 20’s about the Manawatu, inland Taranaki and Central North Island.
Upper South Island
Mostly sunny weather in all areas with light winds, some morning cloud about the east coast gradually breaks. Afternoon sea breezes in coastal areas, northeasterlies may become a bit brisk about the Canterbury and Kaikoura coastlines during the afternoon and evening cooling temperatures down.
HIGHS: 17-21 in all areas, the slightly cooler end of the temperatures about the West Coast coastline then the warmest in Nelson and Marlborough. Canterbury around 17-19 today although more sheltered spots like the Amuri Plains may make low 20 high’s.
Lower South Island
Mostly sunny with some high cloud developing, light winds generally however northeasterlies pick up along the eastern coastline of Otago in the afternoon. Northerlies increase about Fiordland from midday with some cloud, showers develop later in the evening. There is the low risk of an isolated shower about hills and ranges of North Otago in the afternoon, any that do form will clear in the evening.
HIGHS: 19-20 about Southland and coastal Otago, 16-17 on the West Coast south of the Glaciers. 22-24 degree temperatures in Central Otago.

What’s going on in Northland? Cloudy and damp for days on end.
Despite the talk of settled weather going on, Northland has been plagued by showers and cloudy skies for the last few days and it is set to continue till at least Saturday when it finally clears away with a more persistent southwesterly airflow pushing through. This area of frontal activity did look like clearing initially today going back a few days now but it just keeps wanting to hang around.
So what is going on?
Basically there has been and will be till later on Saturday two areas of high pressure either side of the country, the high in the Tasman Sea is bringing a cooler air mass up from the southwest while a high to the east in the Pacific Ocean is bringing a warmer air mass down from the north.
These two air masses have been meeting over Northland producing a stationary front. Here is a description of a stationary front from Wikipedia which describes what one is very nicely:
”A stationary front is a boundary between two different air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other. On a weather map, this is shown by an inter-playing series of blue spikes pointing one direction and red domes pointing the other. They tend to remain essentially in the same area for extended periods of time, and waves sometimes propagate along the frontal boundary. A wide variety of weather can be found along a stationary front, but usually clouds, prolonged precipitation, and storm trains are found there. Stationary fronts will either dissipate after several days or devolve into shear lines, but can change into a cold or warm front if conditions aloft change.”
So cloudy conditions with prolonged precipitation fits the bill nicely here.
