Observation: It's Raining, it's Raining . . . . for the second time today but only 3mm so far which makes a big fat total rain for November of 12.5mm, not much at all considering we are already half way through the month. Warm but not "Hot" today but we did get some decent Sun during the afternoon.

Current Recordings: Temp: 14.0c Going down, Humidty: 99%, Rain: 3.00 mm, Average Wind Speed (10 Mins): 4 km/h WNW, Pressure 1006.1 hPa Rising.

Thursday’s national forecast
« Reply #12 on: November 15, 2012, 07:42:37 PM »
Upper North Island

The odd shower about western areas this morning with northwesterly breezes, in the afternoon winds change west to southwest with conditions easing and showers clearing in the evening. Later at night another period of showers may move through however. The Bay Of Plenty is most likely to remain dry in the morning however there will be plenty of cloud, later in the afternoon showers develop possibly heavy then easing at night. Westerlies ease off this morning in Gisborne, expect fine weather with some cloud, in the afternoon cloud builds then late afternoon a few showers get going with east to southeast winds.
HIGHS: 19-20 for most today. 18-19 for Bay Of Plenty and the Waikato.

Lower North Island

The odd shower about western areas this morning with northwesterly breezes, in the afternoon winds tend west to southwest with showers becoming heavy later about Taranaki and into the Central North Island. Showers ease later at night. Westerlies ease off this morning in Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa, expect fine weather with some cloud, in the afternoon cloud builds then late afternoon a few showers get going with east to southeast winds. Showers may be heavy from later in the evening about Hawkes Bay.
HIGHS: 16-17 for most. 19-20 about Hawkes Bay however, late teens in Wairarapa.

Upper South Island

A mix of cloudy and sunny areas today, east to southeasterly winds on the east coast and west to southwest winds on the West Coast. Cloud may be thicker morning and night in most places. Later in the afternoon isolated showers develop about inland hills and ranges possibly becoming heavy at times, showers may spread to the coast in the evening then clearing at night. There is a chance one or two showers may turn thundery late afternoon or evening for a time, the risk is fairly low but it is possible.
HIGHS: 18-19 about Nelson and Marlborough. 16-17 on the West Coast and in Canterbury.

Lower South Island

A mix of cloudy and sunny areas today, east to southeasterly winds on the east coast and southwesterly winds on the West Coast. Cloud may be thicker morning and night. Later in the afternoon isolated showers develop about inland hills and ranges possibly becoming heavy at times then clearing at night. There is a chance one or two showers may turn thundery about eastern Otago late afternoon or evening for a time.
HIGHS: 15-17 about Southland and Otago, 14-15 on the West Coast south of the Glaciers.

Showers, how often and where & when they fall

Trying to predict showers in exact locations is always a challenging task for forecasters and because we're just small islands surrounded by water a shower seems to pop up almost everyday somewhere in the country.

The main centres are no exception and out of the six cities which one receives more showers than the others?

Does Dunedin see more than its fair share? Christchurch is the driest of the six centres however a prolonged southerly can see showers lasting for a few days. Wellington can be hit from more than one direction.Hamilton sees westerlies bring in a number while Tauranga sees rain at times throughout the year and is vulnerable from the north. Auckland has its moments and they seem to sometimes form without warning.

Of course wind direction plays a major part for all of the cities but not always.
A day like today sees the breezes generally gentle.Showers from cloud build ups are taking place so it goes to show there are always exceptions when there's instability overhead.

Of the provincial cities Invercargill is exposed to the west, Palmerston North is also open to that direction but not solely. Timaru is protected from the west and Nelson enjoys a dry and mild southerly on occasion.

Rotorua and Whangarei see showers off and on so whether it's an inland or coastal city they seem to sweep in at anytime of the season.

Showers can be a nuisance and yet without them we could possibly see prolonged dry spells as rainbands aren't necessarily that frequent in all areas.

So love them or hate them it seems they're here to stay!
