After an overnight low of a mild 10.9ºC, we have reached a blustery high of 15.0ºC by 14:22 and now it has retreated to a low so far for the day of 10.3ºC!  The wind has been westerly since 8am gusting to 53.6km/hr by 14:43 this afternoon just after the max temp!!  Rain of 2.0mm was recorded befpre 7am.  Windy all day - Wind Run so far is 357kms...

A southwesterly flow is continuing to establish itself over the country today. That will keep our weather unsettled today in most areas.
 
WeatherWatch.co.nz Analyst Howard Joseph says rain and wind spread onto the lower and central North Island overnight and that will continue to work its way north.
 
Mr Joseph notes that Hawkes Bay and Gisborne may be able to dodge the rain drops today. In fact, Gisborne may actually see a decent amount of sunshine and possibly even hit 20 for a high. But the rest of the North Island will see showers, gusty winds and chilly temps. Most areas should top out in the mid-teens. All in all, it does not look like a favourable day for hanging out the laundry on the NI. The only exception being; Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.
 
The South Island will see a well-established southwest flow keep things cool and rainy for the western and southern regions. WeatherWatch.co.nz Analyst Aaron Wilkinson says that wind chill could be a factor for livestock as gusty winds combine with cold temperatures about Southland and the Catlins.
 
Mr Wilkinson also says that Christchurch can expect a sunny start to Saturday and temperatures will like warm into the mid-teens early. However, the southwest change should move in around midday and temperatures should begin to fall.

A weakening front that is moving across the country still has enough energy to kick up the winds today.
 
Gusty winds move from the South Island to the North Island during the overnight hours. Wind reports of 40 to 50 km/h were common about the North Island. On the Mainland, Cantabs can expect to see the winds increasing during the rest of the afternoon hours and into this evening. Gusty winds will also continue about the north-western and southern sections of the island.
 
Government forecast MetService has lifted all the wind warnings that had been in place for yesterday and earlier today. Damaging winds are not expected, but the strong and gusty winds will likely continue into the evening hours and then ease a bit overnight.
 
The weather should be a bit more settled about the country tomorrow as we will be in between systems. The next spring weather-maker is expected to move in early Monday morning.
