Wednesday still a bit dull - New low for Sunday
«

Tomorrow is still looking a bit dull across most of the country but there will be some areas of sunshine. There will be some sun to start in the North Island however showers develop in the morning in Northland spreading east during the day getting into eastern Bay of Plenty and the Central North Island late afternoon or evening. It is expected to be a nice day on the east coast with light winds, some morning cloud and possible showers about Wairarapa will clear.
Morning rain will ease in most of Canterbury to showers clearing around midday, sunny breaks develop into the afternoon with northeasterly breezes. Showers about coastal Otago and perhaps South Canterbury hang on a bit longer clearing late afternoon. On the West Coast expect mostly cloudy skies although there may be some sunshine about South Westland to start. Showers in Buller spread to other areas around midday as the flow turns more westerly.
Expect wet weather in Nelson for much of the day with north to northeasterly breezes.
There should be a reprieve for eastern regions in the South Island from Thursday through to Saturday with mostly sunny weather expected and light northeasterly breezes. A low that initially was showing a track south of New Zealand moving east for this coming Sunday is now set to develop west of the country as noted in this mornings article, we could well experience much of the same as we have had with previous lows recently, heavy rain in the North Island then moving to the east in the South Island.

Brief brighter spell before cloud and showers returned.
Haven't (locally) had an August with seriously deficient sun (< 85% average) since 1990, but this one looks like a medallist
with the race less than half over, unless there's a big change soon.

Update: The Rain is back - Wednesday 15th

Weather Watch.
Rain has moved onto the west of the North Island this morning and early afternoon with a few heavy falls in the mix, as the day wears on expect this band of rain to move east and in behind conditions will ease to showers with northerlies changing westerly. There have been a few sunny areas out east this morning but high cloud is increasing ahead of the front moving in from the west.
The warmest place in the country right now is Gisborne on 17 degrees, winds are light from the northeast.
The South Island has a mixed bag with skies mostly cloudy across the island however there are a few pockets of sunshine mainly in parts of South and North Canterbury, also Southland. The West Coast now has showers in most places although there are some dry areas, about the top in Nelson and Marlborough rain has moved in this morning, heavy falls are possible from this afternoon or evening.
South Canterbury and coastal Otago definitely were the spots for the heaviest rain yesterday, up to 70mm fell in Dunedin and 30mm in Timaru. Christchurch received up to 19mm. The rain while it passed over Christchurch was generally around the same intensity as the rain on Sunday and Monday however it moved on and passed by more quickly. Still with the water logged ground it was not needed.
Metservice
A trough, supporting a band of heavy rain and lying over northern Northland this morning, will move down into the Auckland city area by early afternoon, over the Coromandel Peninsula by evening and then by midnight, lie just west of East Cape.
The risk of thunderstorms with the trough increases from a moderate risk over Northland to high during the afternoon in the northeast of Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, the Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne. While in the southwest of Northland and the rest of Auckland, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms. In all these areas, thunderstorms may support locally heavy rainfall of 15 to 25mm/hr, small hail, wind gusts of 90km/hr, and there is also a risk of small tornadoes - especially about the northeast of Auckland, eastern Coromandel Peninsula and coastal Bay of Plenty/northern Gisborne.
From Waikato to Taupo, there is a low risk of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening, which extends to Waitomo, Taumarunui and Taranaki from late afternoon.

Rain moving into Taranaki and Northland this morning then along the rest of the West Coast by mid morning with northerlies, rain spreads into Bay of Plenty and parts of the Central North Island in the afternoon. Expect heavy falls at times with this band of rain. Winds change westerly in behind with rain easing to showers in the evening about Northland and Auckland, and at night in Taranaki through to Bay of Plenty. There may be a few sunny periods with some high cloud this morning before this rain band moves over.
Mostly sunny on the east coast with light winds, northeasterlies and high cloud increases in the afternoon and a few showers develop at night possibly becoming heavy. Mostly cloudy about Kapiti and Wellington with northerlies, the odd shower at times during the day particularly morning and evening, long dry spells too.
In the east of the South Island south of Kaikoura expect showers clearing around midday, sunny breaks then develop with northeasterlies. Southland and Central Otago can expect a few sunny areas by midday, perhaps the odd shower in western areas of Central Otago in the evening.
Showers about Nelson and Tasman with northerly winds, a few dry areas on the east coast north of Kaikoura and some inland areas to start. Rain works it’s way south from late afternoon possibly heavy especially in Nelson and the surrounding ranges. Mostly cloudy on the West Coast with showers north of Hokitika in the morning, a few showers spreading southwards during the afternoon.
High’s in the mid teens in the northeast of the North Island, 16 to 17 along the east coast and 13 to 14 degrees elsewhere. Temperatures ranging between 12 and 14 degrees this afternoon in the South Island.
