Severe Weather Outlook - Issued by the Metservice:
A ridge will move to the east of the country on Saturday as another major trough with it s associated band of rain and strong northeast winds approaches. It is expected to spread over Northland during Saturday bringing moderate confidence that rainfall amounts will reach warning criteria there, mainly in eastern areas.. On Sunday, heavy north to northeasterly rain is expected swing through the Bay of Plenty and down the North Island east coast to reach the upper South Island east coast later in the day. Confidence is now moderate that warnable rainfall will occur in Bay of Plenty, but elsewhere from Waikato to Gisborne and south through Hawkes Bay to Wairarapa confidence is low, due to the likely speed of the system.
The easterly rain band will become quasi-stationary over north Otago,Canterbury and Marlborough from later Sunday through to and including Tuesday. The focus for the heaviest rain now seems to be over north Canterbury and the Kaikoura Ranges once again, where the risk of warnable rainfall is now moderate. Elsewhere in these eastern areas the risk is lower. However, given the recent heavy rainfalls in these areas, enough rain is likely to fall over about a 48 hour period to cause further problems.

Another interesting weather situation developing – looks like we have a high again to our east (we had this same scenario a week or so ago) blocking the movement of a low out in the Tasman.

So, cloudy day for the south island tomorrow, but a little better start for the north but I think the cloud will increase through the day with rain hitting Northland early afternoon, spreading down to Auckland by the evening and continuing to cover most of the north island and top of the south island by early Sunday morning.

There’s also likely to be strong northeast winds with this and plenty of rain, some heavy falls are likely, possibly even some scattered thunderstorms.

Sunday afternoon may see the rain and wind easing back from the top of the north island down, but instead it sets in for the south island with easterly winds, and snow also likely in the high regions.

Attached are the midday charts for Saturday and Sunday from Ogimet

Thanks heaps Derek for a clear easy to follow report.
I just wish you could have done better for Sunday :)

Unfortunately this on again off again rain is a pain. Our grounds are just bog and surface water. The fine days have no heat in them and the ground is not drying up. The lawns have not been mowed for around 8 weeks now and all is really untidy. Down the back where our wood shed lives reminds me of a pig pen. Just mud and extremely slippery. I am real careful with the wheelbarrow and the dogs tearing around me. Landing on my swede is not a desirable option.
I will definitely be pleased to see the back end of this winter.

Here's a snip from my WXSIM forecast from this morning for Waitakere

Quote
Today
Partly cloudy in the morning, becoming cloudy in the afternoon. Moderate to dense fog in the morning. A chance of rain in the afternoon. Scattered thundershowers possible. High 19°. Wind northeast around 16 kph, gusting to 37 kph, in the morning, becoming 23 kph, gusting to 37 kph, in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation 30 percent. Precipitation mostly less than 2 mm.

Tonight
Dense overcast. Patchy light fog. Rain very likely. Scattered thunderstorms likely. Low 13°, but temperatures rising after midnight. Wind northeast around 21 kph, gusting to 36 kph, in the evening, becoming 16 kph, gusting to 30 kph, after midnight. Chance of precipitation 90 percent. Precipitation mostly between 30 and 50 mm.

Sometimes the rainfall amounts from GFS models are a bit exaggerated, hoping that's the case for this one!

Jenny, only get worried when you start to get webbed feet, the first sign of a problem is when you start looking at them on a regular basis.  LOL :)

I managed to get half my Orchard Mowed (a better description would probably be topped) today on double the normal cutting height but it was still quite wet.

I have ordered a set of swamp mats, can't find my Snow Shoes? LOL :)
