Weekend Forecast 4th - 5th August 2012
« on: August 01, 2012, 11:22:50 PM »
Issued by The MetService

Saturday
North Island, rain or showers in the north and east, a few showers in most other places, but mainly fine in the southwest. South Island, rain or showers in the north and east, dry in the west and south.

Sunday
North Island, rain or showers in the north and east, a few showers in most other places, but mainly fine in the southwest. South Island, rain or showers in the north and east, dry in the west and south.

Chatham Islands
Cloud increasing and a few showers developing on Friday, with freshening northeasterlies. Cloudy periods Saturday with fresh northeasterlies. Cloudy on Sunday with strong easterlies.

From Weather Watch

Sneak peak for the weekend's weather

This weekend the North Island will continue to get showers at times but there will also be sunny spells and dry weather in the mix, perhaps a focus on showers being a little more frequent in the northeast and along the east coast north of Hawkes Bay. The airflow will be from the northeast, temperatures will be reasonably mild with frosty conditions very unlikely.

On Saturday in the South Island many places look to be cloudy in a northeasterly airflow. Drizzle patches at times with a chance of rain about the Kaikoura Coast, long dry spells also in many regions. Southland and South Westland should remain largely dry though with sunny spells.

On Sunday damp conditions are more likely to shift to the West Coast and about Nelson, drier out east as the flow turns more northerly.

Tomorrow is looking very much the same as it has been today about the country, a bit wetter north of Hawkes Bay along the east coast and about the Bay of Plenty in the evening however.

ISSUED BY MetService
8:13 am 03-Aug-2012

Heavy rain continuing in the hills and ranges of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay through to Saturday morning
A slow-moving low to the west of the North Island is directing a moist east to northeast flow over the country.
Rain is forecast to continue in many eastern areas due to this flow, with further heavy falls expected about the hills and ranges of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay through to Saturday morning. A further 80 to 120mm of rain is possible in these areas during this time.
People in these regions are advised to be aware of rising rivers and streams and watch for localised surface flooding and slips.
The warning for the hills and ranges of the Tararua District and the ranges of Nelson west of Motueka is downgraded to a Watch, as no widespread heavy falls are expected, although further rain is likely

Looking at Ogimet charts, the low that's been a real bother for the week does appear to finally weakening but it's not totally easing out of the picture yet.

I don't think anywhere is going to get really good weather - there's still plenty of rain and showers in places (look for the shades of green and blue overlay on the charts). But there's also a good chance that plenty of places will escape and have at least one dry day over the weekend - just may have to put up with some cloud though.

New Plymouth gets my vote for the place to be on Saturday - a fine and sunny morning should last through to mid afternoon there...

The charts attached are for Saturday and Sunday midday (but I've looked at other times around them also to get an idea of changes)

Saturday
North Island - rain or showers in Auckland region and the east most of the day, and developing further north and for Taranaki later in the day.
South Island - some light rain or showers in the morning clearing in the north and down the east coast during the day, also possibly some in Westland and Fiordland regions.
Sunday
North Island - still looks like predominantly wet weather for the northern regions.
South Island - again some wet stuff in the north for Nelson Marlborough perhaps, and in South Westland.

Outlook for Saturday
« Reply #5 on: August 03, 2012, 07:45:04 PM »
The east coast of the North Island is looking likely to receive rain on Saturday, also from East Cape right up north through to the eastern coastline of Northland should expect showers, the odd sunny period too. Dry at first in western areas however showers start to trickle in by evening.

The South Island is looking cloudy also, expect showers in Nelson and along the east coast clearing in some places in the afternoon particularly in Canterbury and Otago. A few showers on the West Coast becoming more widespread about South Westland by evening. Dry in Southland for much of the day. Winds will be breezy from the northeast.

Temperatures of 14 degrees on average can be expected about the coastlines south of Gisborne and Taranaki, further north expect high’s of between 15 and 17 degrees. Cooler in the Central North Island with high’s of 13 expected. High’s of 13 for most in the South Island, a degree or two warmer about Marlborough, Nelson and Buller.
