Pretty jolly foggy up in the hills in Waitakere...
Overnight low of 7.2°C and now 7.8°C - will probably take a while to warm up today if the foggy conditions don't lift.  No rain recorded since yesterday but everything is dripping wet with the fog.

foggy here
due to light winds over night and relatively clear skies as the low in the north tasman rolls over the top of the auckland area and onto northland ( we are in an area called a col (i.e an area between 2 areas of low pressure)

Lots of fog in Waitakere (and Auckland) which lingered around to late morning, becoming a glorious sunny afternoon getting up to a high of 14.5°C.  Its reasonably clear now, just some high cloud about before darkness set in, temperature is down to 8.6°C and falling quickly.

Yes, heaps of people at Bethells Beach too - well probably a few more than 10... (that is lots for Bethells :) ) took the dog there for a quick run and play in the water as we were early enough leaving work and it was just such a nice afternoon.

Thursday’s national forecast
« Reply #15 on: July 05, 2012, 07:33:53 PM »
Cloudy areas north of Auckland with light winds swinging south to southwesterly in the afternoon, a few isolated showers moving through possibly heavy at times. Temperatures once again around 16 degrees. Rain on the east coast of the North Island clears north of Hawkes Bay in the afternoon as southeasterlies ease, rain will continue for most of the day about the lower North Island with cool southeasterlies, showers may move into southern Taranaki after dark. Mostly fine and sunny about other areas in the north with light winds after a foggy start.

Cloudy areas about Southland tomorrow with the chance of a few morning showers, light winds. Cloudy skies from the Otago Coastline north through to Marlborough with rain or drizzle, slightly heavier rain about Marlborough with breezier southeasterlies there. Mostly sunny with some cloud about Central Otago and on the West Coast with light winds after a cold start. High’s in the high single figures for most areas, the West Coast should get into the low teens however.

Wet in the Wairarapa
« Reply #16 on: July 05, 2012, 07:38:34 PM »
The same system or band of rain if you will that caused the torrential rain in Auckland on Tuesday is still hanging around although it is packing less punch. The Wairarapa is set to get some rain out of this band today fed by a depression and associated southeasterly airflow, 30 to 40mm of rain can be expected to fall in the ranges there. Temperatures will be on the cool side at 11 or 12 degrees.

The other interesting feature of the weather today will no doubt be the morning fog anywhere north of the Central North Island through to Auckland, hopefully it doesn’t cause any travel disruptions and isn’t too heavy. Once it clears mostly sunny weather will be on the cards with light winds.

The West Coast of the South Island will again be the pick of the bunch as the alps block cloud and rain coming over from the east in the southeasterly airflow.

Fog flight misery at Auckland Airport
« Reply #17 on: July 05, 2012, 07:40:26 PM »
More passengers are being stranded at Auckland Airport this morning where thick fog has already forced the cancellation of 40 flights.

Forecasters are expecting the fog to be mostly cleared by midday.

By 8.40am there had already been 21 arriving and 19 departing flights cancelled.
Many others are "delayed indefinitely''.

Air New Zealand spokeswoman Tracy Sneaton said it was not yet known how many passengers had been affected.

Ms Sneaton said all of Air New Zealand's domestic jets were operating to schedule but regional services had been put on hold.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the fog is already lifting across some parts of Auckland with most of it clearing by early afternoon.

The only international service to be affected was an Air New Zealand flight from Rarotonga, which was diverted to Wellington earlier this morning when fog was thicker at the airport.

Ms Sneaton said the aircraft had refuelled and would be heading back to Auckland Airport this morning.

Passengers are being told to check arrivals and departures information on the airport website.

"Very hard to predict fog, as soon as the low visibility has lifted we will be advised,'' airport spokesman Richard Llewellyn said.

She's been dreary in Christchurch
« Reply #18 on: July 05, 2012, 07:44:05 PM »
The weather has been cloudy one way or another for what seems like ages here in Christchurch and now we’ve had drizzly rain for the last 3 or 4 days aswell with cool temperatures around 7 or 8 degrees. No doubt many other eastern areas in the South Island have experienced the same.

There is a light coming at the end of the tunnel however as I’m seeing alot of settled weather coming up from Saturday with light winds and high pressure looking to dominate, atleast 6 days in a row of settled sunny weather is looking possible actually however there may be some cloud at times. Perhaps light southwesterlies pushing through on Sunday may deliver some cloud.

Either way after the continuous cloudiness we have been under it is coming time soon to have some sun and a long period of it at that, good thing to as I need to do a little work to my stormchasing van and I’m sure many of you are looking forward to getting out there to get jobs done about the place aswell.
