Looks like we have had the coldest night of the year sofar.
Its -6.2c here in Bishopdale Chch.
It going to be a cold run to work and a cold day at work as all heating is turn off when room temp gets to 15c.
7 months of the year its over 25c inside so working in winter is just so cold and looks like i have some more Chilblains added to my hand.

so we've had quite a dumping of snow overnight.
it's still snowing very lightly.
temp currently 0.3°C.
10-15cm on the ground. guess i should have measured it.
but here's a pic.

Showers again for Waitakere today - currently reasonably clear but patches of heavy cloud can be seen.  We've had 2 mm rain so far today, current temperature is 7.9°C, and falling - the low earlier was 7.2°C
Can hear the wind raging in the trees on the ridge up the hill, but as usual it's very sheltered at our place.

An improvement on yesterday in Invercargill (Just!) Temperature improved yesterday evening when SW winds kicked in bringing warmer air of the sea. (Interesting to watch during the change as everytime the wind swung between NW & SW temp would rise and fall 2 to 3c with it. This morning very strong SW wind, 6.6c, showers around mostly nearer the coast.

Jenny - after a winter of it including hail, ice, snow, biting winds, slush, gumboots, stuck at home etc, you would be thankful for your mild winters and warm lovely summers.  I think the novelty of snow wears thin after a while... ;)

Looking out the window here at University, moments ago the visible sky was a glorious blue and clearly it was very sunny.  Just when I was getting my hopes up that it was nice outside, now it has turned palid and it's raining again.
Back in Waitakere, another recent shower again has taken my MTD total over 100 mm, my rainfall graph looks like a growing set of steps... a shower approx every 2 hours or so...

But just once. Just once would be cool. Just so I know, touch, see, feel, hold, play, experience.

Follow these steps.
1. Take ice from freezer
2. Tip ice in to bowl, leave until it's surface is clear and it is beginning to melt*
3. If you have an ice shaver, shave the ice, if not, use your cheese grater
4. Now you have a pile of shaved ice (and cold hands)
5. Make a ball of shaved ice - like a snow ball (but don't compact hard)
6. Find person, throw ball at them.
7. Grab more, chase person and try to get it down their back behind their neck.
8. Place any remaining shaved ice in a pair of your shoes, then wear the shoes for a while.

This will give you an approximate experience of spending a few minutes in snow :) :)

*note: ice straight from freezer is about -15°C to -18°C so need to let it get a bit closer to 0°C for this comparison...
