Your Monday outlook
« Reply #1 on: August 13, 2012, 12:42:26 AM »
It will be difficult to find a dry slice of Aotearoa tomorrow.

Heavy rain will be likely for Christchurch and the rest of Canterbury.  Eastern Otago will also see some heavy falls tomorrow.  The Mainland’s western sections could see some precipitation tomorrow as well, but that should be mainly during the morning hours.  The deep south could see a few showers in the morning, with a better chance for more widespread rain in the afternoon and evening.

On the North Island, rain will start the day covering the northern half.  Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Rotorua are just a few areas that are likely to start the day wet.  Some brief heavy falls are possible early tomorrow too.  The best chance for that will be in areas south of Auckland to around Hamilton and then over to the western Bay of Plenty.  The chance for heavy rain in these areas will end by midday.

The brief heavy rain threat will then shift southeast to Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa for the late morning and early afternoon hours.  Rain will ease to showers about the northern half of the North Island.  A few peeks of sun may even show up.  But that won’t last long as clouds and more showers move back in late in the afternoon and evening.

Waitakere

Currently sunny but some heavy cloud about the region.  Showers likely today - current temperature is 11.1°C and rain so far is 1.6 mm.

Our 7 day rain total is around 46 mm and the 30 day total is now over 220 mm - meaning its pretty jolly wet

Heavy rain causes floods around Canterbury 13th August 2012
« Reply #8 on: August 13, 2012, 09:37:57 AM »
Dozens of Canterbury properties were flooded by heavy rain overnight.

A Fire Service spokesman said there were 39 weather-related calls from the region between about 10pm and 2am, mostly for surface flooding.

The incidents were mostly around Lyttelton and Sumner, already sodden after several periods of heavy rain in the past month.

Port Robinson, Nth Canterbury -9.40am

Overcast with rain. Strong SW wind gusting up to 24kmh. Temperature 7.8° and may limp up a degree or two. Forecast high is 12° , but my estimate yesterday was spot on and we were'nt within cooey of the met prediction.  Another day for stoking up the logfire.

The sun appeared and disappeared just as quick. Back to overcast and I guess more rain to come.

Hows everyone's wood supplies. We are chewing through 4 loads pretty quick here. Mind the fire is on all day as well.

A better day than expected really, only a couple of very brief light showers, otherwise a partly cloudy day with plenty of sunny periods.  Temperature got to 15.5°C and just 2 mm of rain so far.

Monday’s national forecast
« Reply #17 on: August 13, 2012, 10:20:34 PM »
A mix of cloudy and sunny areas for most in the North Island today, expect the odd shower at times also, west to southwesterly breezes in all regions. About western Taranaki, the Waikato, Central North Island and western Bay of Plenty expect heavy rain in the morning then easing in the afternoon to showers.

Heavy rain develops about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne during late morning then eases to showers in the evening as winds change southwest. High cloud and dry to start in Wellington and Wairarapa however a few showers from afternoon more so in Wairarapa.

Sunny with some cloud about the top of the South Island, light winds. High cloud along the West Coast, it should remain dry with light winds. Cloudy about Kaikoura with westerlies. Rain in Canterbury heavy at times easing from afternoon, gusty southwesterlies ease later in the evening.

Cloudy about Otago with a few drizzle patches this morning, the odd heavier shower from afternoon as southerlies pick up a little mainly in the east. Cloudy in Southland with the odd drizzle patch possible, perhaps a slightly heavier shower mainly in the east in the evening for a time.

Snow above 700m in Canterbury and Otago.

Mild north of Waikato, about Bay of Plenty and Gisborne today with 16 to 17 degree temperatures likely. 14 to 15 in most other regions however some Central North Island areas may only get into the low teens.

13 to 14 degree high’s in most western and northern areas of the South Island today, colder in Southland, Otago and Canterbury however with 10 to 11 degree high’s more likely.
