Gorgeous day here in the Hutt. There's the odd shower coming through. Only 12 C but no wind so sun is quite warm. Humidity at 90%. Mostly high cloud

Mild, mix of rain/sun. Couple of pops of thunder, nothing much. One report of possible tornado in Bell Block (near met service station) but I think it was just a localised, strong wind gust last night.

Couple of brief heavy-ish showers here during mid-pm, with a sky as black as my heart! Looked like we'd even get some thunder, but nothing happened....sigh!
Nice mild temps, though...

Mostly cloudy about the North Island today although there may be a few sunny breaks at times, expect fresh northwesterly winds and showers a few of which may be heavy especially afternoon then easing later in the evening.
Morning rain eases about Wellington to showers, one or two of which may be heavy. Winds will be northwesterly at first tending southerly by evening. On the east coast, any morning rain clears becoming fine and sunny with mild temperatures in the afternoon. The odd shower may spread from the west in the evening however.
Rain in the South Island about Buller, Nelson and Marlborough easing to showers in the morning with light winds tending south to southwesterly during the day. Showers south of Greymouth clear in the morning then about Buller from afternoon with sunny breaks then increasing.
Expect showers in Canterbury with easterly winds tending southerly around midday, drizzle patches in coastal Otago with east to northeast winds. Cloudy areas and a chance of sun in Southland and Central Otago with east to northeast breezes, mainly dry but the odd light shower possible in the afternoon mainly in the east.
Snow in the South Island stays above 1000m.
High’s expected today in the North Island are 17 north of Auckland, 16 to 17 on the east coast after midday, 13 to 14 in Wellington and about the Central North Island. Mid teen temperatures elsewhere. High’s ranging from 12 to 13 degrees about the top of the South Island and along the West Coast, 9 to 10 degrees in Christchurch and Otago, 11 for Southland.

2cm hail south of Auckland

Thunderstorms arrived on the west coast of the North Island just south of Auckland through to about Te Kuiti around midday today.
A report of great lightning, intense rain and hail up to 2cm in size has come in from Simon Williams who was in the Hampton Downs area as it moved through. Unfortunately or fortunately depending who you talk to the storms weakened a fair amount after making landfall although areas of heavy rain have continued to move east.
Taranaki overnight around 1am looks to of got a lot of lightning, would have been an exciting time that’s for sure. I saw a report of a tornado in Taranaki from last night and it is possible however it could well have been strait line winds which are a different phenomena often associated with thunderstorms and can mistakenly be reported as tornadoes here in New Zealand.
The weather is quite unsettled around the country today with mostly cloudy skies and showers here and there, although sunny breaks are appearing in places. Rain or showers currently hugging more coastal areas in Canterbury should become more widespread later this afternoon or evening. On the West Coast of the South Island, south of Greymouth sunny spells are expected do gradually develop this afternoon.
