Port Robinson, North Canterbury 7,30am

The southerly shower band which is sweeping up the country has just drawn level with us  (70km south of Kaikoura). Not a lot of wind (2-3kph) at the moment. Squalls of rain can be seen out to sea, but no rain on landfall as yet. Temperature 9.3° after a low of 8.5°. Predicted high is just 12°.

Upper North Island

Southwesterly breezes increase later this morning, expect sunny areas and some cloud. Mostly sunny at first in the Bay Of Plenty. In the West there is the risk of a shower or two this afternoon otherwise mostly dry. Mostly sunny to start in Gisborne, in the afternoon southerlies freshen with some increasing cloud and the odd shower from evening.
HIGHS: 16-17 today for most areas, perhaps 18 in Gisborne

Lower North Island
From Taranaki through to Kapiti and also the Central North Island expect westerly breezes and some cloud developing this morning, the odd shower at times developing also but many dry periods too. Winds tend more southwest by midday. About Wellington expect westerly breezes with sunny areas and some cloud, cool southerlies freshen around midday bringing cloud then evening showers. Mostly sunny about Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa with light winds, southerlies freshen around midday with increasing cloud then expect evening showers.
HIGHS: Mid teen temperatures for most in the west and Wairarapa, 13 to 14 about Wellington. 16 to 17 about Hawkes Bay.

Upper South Island

Southwesterly breezes on the western ranges with showers which ease during the day then clear in the evening as southwesterlies die out. Mostly sunny in Nelson with light winds tending southwest, in the evening a few showers may develop from the east. Sunny in Marlborough with southwesterly breezes, winds tend more southerly around midday with increasing cloud and a few showers developing on the coast south of Clifford Bay. In the evening winds tend more southeast with more widespread showers about the district. Southerlies freshen about Canterbury this morning with cloud, a few showers from midday more so in inland areas with snow flurries to 700m lowering to 500m in the evening then clearing at night.

Lower South Island

Cold southwesterlies about Southland and Otago today with showers and snow flurries to 500m here and there easing in the afternoon then clearing by evening, expect sunny areas at times after midday also. Southwesterlies ease after midday dying out at night. Any morning showers clear on the western ranges, sunny areas afterwards with south to southwesterly breezes easing in the evening. The weather so far today isn't a record breaker in any sense of the word however it's variable and in most places quite cool.

Sharalee from Taranaki told us "chilly in New Plymouth but sky is slowly turning blue" however central parts of the North Island wasn't overly warm "cold wind in Rotorua, but sunny"said one WeatherWatch.co.nz facebook reader.

Conditions in the south seem to have deteriorated this morning with Nicole chiming in with "Pretty average/chilly in chch today bbbrrrr i want sun lol" but back up north in Featherston it seemed brighter with" blue sky, yellow sun and green grass here" according to local Francie Smith.

Shena said it was much better near her earlier this morning but we didn't quite catch her location" 13.8 degrees already, sun is out and gorgeous blue skies".

Aimee also kept mum on her whereabouts but mentioned in response to to our question whether anyone had some blues 'cos of the weather she said"Only blues here is the colour of the sky".

Tonight it still appears that temperatures are set to fall quite quickly after sunset and the risk of frost remains in sheltered areas.
