Severe Weather outlook - Metservice.
On Saturday, a ridge over New Zealand should move slowly east as a weak front crosses the south of the South Island. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, one low from the sub-tropics should move slowly down the Tasman Sea as another low moves southeastwards over waters east of the North Island. A strong to gale northeast airstream is expected to gradually spread rain over the northeast of the North Island during this period with a low risk that rainfall totals will reach warning levels from Northland down to Bay of Plenty.
Another ridge should spread over the South Island on Sunday and Monday with settled weather, but some rain may reach eastern areas on Tuesday.

Weekend could turn wet for the North Island from Weather Watch.
We will start off the weekend on a settled note. But North Islanders and some South Islanders may find the end of the weekend a bit wet.
For today, look for more settled weather across the country thanks to the departing area of high pressure. As the high continues to move off to the east, the door will be open for a Tasmanian low to make its way toward the North Island.
That will mean a few more clouds for the North Island today, but no rain.
The South Island could also see a few more clouds, especially the western sections. A little bit of light precipitation is possible, but should be confined to Fiordland.
On Saturday, the low will continue to push closer to the North Island. The wind field on the front side of the low will start to affect the eastern sections of the island by creating more of an on-shore flow. That could lead to a few showers for the Bay of Plenty on Saturday. There shouldn't be a lot of support for the showers though, so chances are fairly small at this point.
There is a better chance for showers for the far northern regions of Northland. However, anything that falls should be fairly light.
Most of the South Island should be dry on Saturday, but a bit on the cloudy side. A few showers are possible for the deep south.
On Sunday, things start to turn pretty wet for the North Island and upper South Island. The western sections will likely see precipitation before noon. During the afternoon, the showers should spread across the rest of the North Island and upper South Island.
Southland, Otago, southern West Coast and southern Canterbury should be dry but a bit cloudy.

Night Skiing on Hold 21st to 22nd July 2012
« Reply #3 on: July 20, 2012, 12:02:18 PM »
Weather is bad news for skifield operators.
From New Zealand Herald.
This week's balmy temperatures mean bad news for Lakes District skifield operators.
Queenstown meteorologist David Crowe said Queenstown's Wednesday maximum of 15.3 degrees Celsius made it the warmest July day since the 16.2C high recorded on July 12, 2003.
The all-time July high for Queenstown was 17.2C in 1958. Wanaka on Wednesday reached 14.8C, with a 7C minimum, and yesterday the
maximum for both Wanaka and Queenstown was 14C.
Mr Crowe said there was no sign of rain in the forecast until at least next Wednesday.
The unseasonal weather forced Coronet Peak skifield yesterday to put its night skiing on hold this weekend.
Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie said the priority was the daytime skiing operations and this meant grooming the field after dark.

Outlook for the weekend
« Reply #5 on: July 20, 2012, 07:19:48 PM »
Conditions are still looking mostly the same as in Howard’s article this morning. The departing high and incoming low towards the North Island means things are slowly becoming less settled, some areas will still have some sunshine however.

East to northeasterly winds will be gusty about the Bay of Plenty northwards on Saturday, areas of cloud increasing during the day with drizzle or light showers later. East to northeasterly winds in most other areas of the North Island but winds will be lighter, sunny areas and some cloud. About Wellington expect northerlies. High’s of between 13 to 15 for most, a degree or two warmer in Northland.

In the South Island for Saturday it’s looking a little cloudier for the lower third of the Island with patchy light rain or drizzle gradually spreading to most areas during the day, it will be dry in Otago for the most part till evening as light southerlies arrive. Mostly fine and sunny about Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman with light winds and some high cloud, sunny about Canterbury also but winds will tend light southwest by late afternoon or evening with some cloud. Cloudy areas on the West Coast with drizzle south of the Glaciers, some rain moves into Fiordland. Temperatures for most between 12 and 14 degrees.

On Sunday rain will move into Northland with drizzle patches south through to the Bay of Plenty and East Cape, east to northeasterly winds will be gusty. Sunny areas and some cloud south of the Central North Island but cloud will thicken during the afternoon with light showers at night. Drizzle for the lower South Island clearing later however moving into mid Canterbury by evening. Dry with some high cloud north of Greymouth along the West Coast, also in Nelson and Marlborough. General cloud lower down will increase in Nelson and Tasman during the afternoon. Any morning drizzle patches south of the Glaciers clear with the odd sunny break then increasing with light winds.

More Rain for the North Island 22nd July 2012
« Reply #6 on: July 21, 2012, 05:10:15 PM »
Rain heading back to the North Island according to Weather Watch

A low pressure centre will make its way toward the North Island overnight.  Already, rain is falling about parts of the far northern tip of Northland.  By morning, it should be close enough to be spreading rain across much of Northland and south to Auckland.
During the afternoon , the rain will drift a little further south and become more organised.  Most of the NI, with the exception of Wairarapa and Wellington should be seeing at least a little rain by sunset.
Some pockets of heavy rain are also possible during the day tomorrow.  That's mainly about the Auckland area.  However, chances for heavy rain are not real high at this point.  That may change late Sunday night into early Monday as better energy moves on shore.  So heavy rain chances will go up for Auckalnd, southern Northland and the Coromandel Peninsula.
The heavy rain threat will shift south and west on Monday,  Bay of Plenty and Gisborne will have the highest risk for seeing heavy rain during the early part of the day.  Later in the day that risk will diminish as it heads southwest toward Hawkes Bay and northern Wairarapa.
The rest of the North Island will be seeing a general rainfall.  However, the far north could actually get a break in the rain late Monday afternoon into Monday evening.
So what's meant to be happening on the South Island during all this?
Well, thanks to a small chunk of high pressure, not much.
Some rain is possible for the upper South Island early on Sunday.  Chances go up a bit for the afternoon and evening.  However, rainfall amounts should be light.
The central South Island could see a fair amount of clouds tomorrow, but it should be dry as long as that high does what it's supposed to.
But the deep south, could start out a bit rainy.  Then, by afternoon, there is likely to be a nice mix of sun and clouds and it should be a settled Sunday for Southland and Otago.
