2. 1956 had 19.01 which is 1.88 above average

3. 2019 had 18.8 which is 1.7 above average

4. 1999 had 18.73 which is 1.60 above average

5. 1935 had 18.70 which 1.57 above average

8. 1989 had 18.42 which is 1.29 above average

9. 1985 had 18.42 which is 1.29 above average

10. 2008 had 18.36 which is 1.23 above average

Note however that January 1956 was very poor month over nearly all of the North Island, and inferior to normal in Nelson and Marlborough - exceptionally cloudy over almost all of the NI and Nelson, humid, and wet in Northland. See the historical summary entry.

By contrast, January 1957 was the sunniest on record for the North Island and also as far south as Westport and Christchurch, with good to ideal holiday weather over almost the whole country.

At Kelburn, I rate January 1965 as the best one for a combination of warmth and sunshine.

January 1975 was very Sunny for the West of the North and South Islands where Greymouth recorded 264 hours of sunshine, also Cape Reinga only recorded 3mm of rain during the month.

Balanced by very cloudy conditions over most of the rest of the SI, due to a very dull 2nd half - I will be updating the Jan 1975 entry later with more detail.

Update that January 2023 made it into top 10 Warm Januaries on record with 1.25 above normal in 1981-2010 normal, but NIWA now uses 1991-2020 climate data that now translates to 1.16 above average

Even with average you never very often get an average month IE with temp wind, or wind die, sun all being avg in one month.
Just one of those things being above or below will change what the avg air temp will be alone.
