Severe earthquake hits Christchurch
Breaking 1:14 PM Sunday Feb 14, 2016

"The whole Boardwalk shook like crazy and plates started smashing in the cafe next door." Sarah Holliman

•A 5.7 magnitude quake struck Christchurch at 1.13pm and was felt as far north as Wellington
•A cliff has collapsed in Sumner
•Shelves have fallen in homes, shops and libraries but so far no reports of serious injuries or damage.
•Riccarton Mall and some other shopping centres have been evacuated.
•Aftershocks are continuing.

Getting a few after shocks the last one was 4.1 about 10min ago.
We just don't need this.

'Is this going to continue forever?'


That was the feeling of Christchurch man Michael, who sat in an armchair in his home in suburban Bishopdale and watched as a magnitude 5.7 quake struck the city this afternoon.

Only minor injuries have been reported following the 1.13pm quake, which was 15km east of Christchurch, at a depth of 15km, Geonet reported.

Michael told RNZ Christchurch people had become too used to earthquakes.

"I was sitting in my basic armchair and I just stayed sitting and watched it happen because it was just another earthquake I could do nothing about," he said.

"We're just too accustomed to earthquakes."

Michael said he feared what today's quake would do for people's perception of the city.

Our Insurance Company still hasn't settled for the first one 5 years later!
