SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY, WAIRARAPA, WANGANUI, TAIHAPE, WELLINGTON, MARLBOROUGH, CANTERBURY

A bitterly cold southerly flow covering New Zealand is expected to persist for the rest of the week, bringing periods of snow to 200 metres in the east from Gisborne to Wellington and about the central high country, and to 100 metres about Marlborough and Canterbury.
The heaviest snow is expected about the hill country between Mohaka and Gisborne City, and a Warning is in force for this area.
This Watch is for the possibility of HEAVY SNOW in the following areas:
Remainder of GISBORNE and HAWKES BAY not covered by the Warning, also EASTERN TAIHAPE and the TARARUA DISTRICT: Snow accumulations may approach warning criteria through to Friday morning above 400 metres, with lesser amounts down to 200 metres.
WELLINGTON and WAIRARAPA (south of the Tararua District): Snow accumulations may approach warning criteria through to this evening above 400 metres, with lesser amounts down to 200 metres.
WESTERN TAIHAPE and the hill country of WANGANUI: Snow accumulations may approach warning criteria through to late afternoon above 400 metres, with lesser amounts down to 200 metres.
CANTERBURY north of the Rakaia River, also SOUTHERN MARLBOROUGH (from the Awatere Valley southwards): Snow accumulations may approach warning criteria through to late afternoon above 300 metres, with lesser amounts down to 100 metres.
