Christchurch's biggest demolition to start
NICOLE MATHEWSON Last updated 17:01 13/03/201

John Kirk-Anderson QUAKE-DAMAGED: PricewaterhouseCoopers Centre is not economic to repair.
Christchurch's biggest demolition job after the Canterbury earthquakes will start tomorrow.

The 21-storey PricewaterhouseCoopers building was Christchurch's largest building by land mass, although it was not the city's tallest building.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority said today that demolition work on the building would start tomorrow.

The joint venture between Arrow International, Nikau and Coleman and Company would take about 40 weeks to complete.

Workers would begin by stripping out the 21 floors over the next few weeks.

The top third of the building would then be demolished using the cut-and-crane method, and the last 14 floors would be demolished using a high-reach crane known as Twinkletoes.

Owners of the 22-year-old building decided it was not feasible to repair the building after it suffered quake damage last year.

Former tenants had already removed office supplies and equipment, the authority said.

I knew the Cooper family daughters and son when in ChCh, involved in the Mitsubishi business in NZ I think.  Sad to see "iconic" new or old, having to come down.  22 years is not really old as far as buildings go, generally rated for 50years at least.

That was the one on TV where one guy lowered a number down to the ground by a rope as the stairs had collapsed.  The others were got out by crane and basket.
Yes the Coopers are a well known family down here.  Is that the one from Cooper Henderson Motors Graeme?
