From the metservice:During Monday, a northeast flow should become established over the country as a large low over the Tasman Sea moves closer to New Zealand. The low is expected to bring significant rain to many western areas of the country and there is high confidence that a rainfall warning will be required in Nelson, Buller, Westland and northern Fiordland on Monday and Tuesday. The heavy rain may continue in these areas on Wednesday although confidence is only low that a rain warning will still be in place.
On Wednesday there is also a low risk that a heavy rainfall warning will be required for the central North Island from Taranaki across Taupo to East Cape.
An intense low of tropical origin may be approaching the north of the North Island on Thursday. This is likely to bring strong to gale easterly winds and moderate to heavy rain to many North Island areas. There is some uncertainty in the predicted position of the low which will determine which areas get the most wind and rain. There is low confidence that a rainfall and wind warning will be needed on Thursday in the north of the North Island from Northland down to Waitomo, Waikato and Bay of Plenty. For central North Island from Taranaki across Taupo to East Cape there is also low confidence that a rainfall warning will be needed on Thursday.
