The public walkway into Cathedral Square opened again in the weekend where thousands took the opportunity to view the Cathedral.
Thousands of people took the opportunity to farewell the city's quake-hit cathedral today before it is demolished.
A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority spokeswoman said about 10,000 people took part in the walkway route to the cathedral.
"It was quite a sombre mod and there were a lot of elderly people. Once it starts to get demolished there will not be any other opportunities for the general public to see the cathedral," she said.
The Anglican Church announced recently that most of the cathedral would be demolished, sparking a wave of public criticism.
The walkway into Cathedral Square will also be open next weekend. It will leave from and return to the Re:Start container mall on Cashel St.
It would be open from 9am to 5pm, with no-one admitted after 4.30pm. Only two weekends are possible because of scheduled demolition work on the BNZ building.
