A low off to the west of the country is expected to direct an unstable north and northwest flow onto the North Island and the upper South Island. This is likely to be accompanied by significant showers, especially along the coast where the relatively warm sea enhances the instability.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in Taranaki, and Northland and along the coasts of Waitomo, Waikato and Auckland. These storms could be accompanied by strong wind gusts, around 90 km/h, heavy rain, 10 to 15mm/hr and small hail.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the east of Coromandel and near the coast of the Bay of Plenty this afternoon and evening. These storms could be accompanied by strong wind gusts, around 90 km/h, heavy rain, 10 to 15mm/hr and small hail.
