A deep low lying just east of the upper North Island is expected to move slowly away today (Wednesday), while a ridge builds over the country. A very strong and cold southerly flow over central and lower parts of the North Island should slowly ease today and early Thursday.

Rain is expected to spread north over eastern parts of the North Island today, while showers gradually ease elsewhere. Rain is expected to become heavy about the Wairoa District and southern parts of the Gisborne ranges from this afternoon (Wednesday), then ease Thursday morning. This Watch is for the possibility that rainfall accumulations could approach warning amounts about the Wairoa District, especially in the ranges just east of Lake Waikaremoana, from this afternoon until late Thusday morning.

Very strong to gale southeasterlies persist about Taranaki today and early Thursday. The risk of severe gales is less likely there today, but is possible for a time overnight tonight so the Watch will be maintained. In addition, strong southeasterlies are expected to develop about eastern Bay of Plenty this evening (Wednesday) and may rise to gale for a time tonight through to late Thursday morning. This Watch is for the possibility that southeasterlies may rise to severe gale for a time about eastern Bay of Plenty and northern parts of Taranaki tonight through to Thursday morning.
