Businesses losing interest in city centre.

The number of businesses wanting to return to Christchurch's central business district has dropped by a quarter since August, according to a new survey.

Reasons given for the change of heart included frustration with rebuild delays and the prospect of unaffordable rents in new buildings. As well, suburban locations were considered more attractive than before as clients had also shifted.

The research, from Lincoln University and commercial realtor CBRE, found that 32 per cent businesses and other office users in Christchurch were planning to shift to the central city.

This figure, down from 44 per cent in an August survey, includes those who were in the suburbs before the earthquakes as well as those forced out of the central city.
