Rain gauge
« on: December 28, 2012, 03:16:14 PM »
Hi all from Paekakariki. Still trialling locations for my WS2355.   Once I get the locations calibrating with MetService's recordings, I will put my station on line. Roof works for wind. I am building a louvre box for the air/pressure sensor, so should that be in full shade/sheltered, or more open like up on a chimney? Is a roof ok for a rain gauge?  There are a lot of trees around where I live as they are used to block out horrible cold katabatic winds ex Transmission Gully, hence the roof or chimney seems to be the location. (We don't use the fireplace.) At present I have a sensor from my old manual Oregon station on a street powerpole. I used to have a wind recorder on farmland behind us, but it got hit and smashed by flying branches in a westerly storm back in Sept and it is subject to low roll clouds, so no go there.

The roof isn't the best place for a rain gauge, strong winds can blow the rain over the top and thus it may under-record.

Thanks David. My neighbour has a nice big open yard free of obstructions, might talk nicely to him instead.
