Current Observation: Fine. The earlier cloud has thinned out quite a bit and there are now many more stars out but still no moon. The breeze has dropped just a bit but it's southerly pedigree can still be felt.

Current Recordings: Temp: 11.2c Going down, Humidty: 85%, Rain: 0.0 mm, Average Wind Speed (10 Mins): 11 km/h S, Pressure 1021.7 hPa Falling.

« Reply #12 on: November 07, 2012, 11:01:51 PM »
Upper North Island

Showers in Gisborne for most of the day with cold southerlies, showers clear at night for a time. Mostly sunny about the Bay Of Plenty with southeasterly breezes, some cloud about western Bay Of Plenty late afternoon may bring a shower or two. Generally sunny for most of Waikato with southeasterly breezes, chance of a late afternoon shower as winds tend light easterly. Any morning showers clear on the western coastline between Waikato and Northland, expect sunny areas and some cloud with southwesterlies easing off in the morning then tending easterly during the afternoon. A few showers may move through late afternoon and evening from Auckland through to Northland any of which clear at night about Auckland, a few may continue about Northland.
HIGHS: 17-18 today for most areas, Gisborne cooler on 13 however.

Lower North Island

Cloudy periods about Wellington with cool southerlies easing at night. Showers in Wairarapa clear in the afternoon then clearing about Hawkes Bay in the evening, cold southerlies. A few brief morning showers about southern Taranaki clear, expect sunny areas and some cloud about western areas otherwise with southeasterly breezes. There may be a morning shower about the Central North Island also however they will clear with sunny areas and some cloud for the rest of the day with southeasterly breezes.
HIGHS: Mid teen temperatures for most in the west, 12-13 about Wellington through to Hawkes Bay.

Upper South Island

Mostly sunny in Nelson and along the western ranges, light winds. Sunny areas develop from afternoon in Marlborough, southeasterly breezes die out at night. A few showers on the coast south of Clifford Bay clear in the afternoon. Any morning showers clear in Canterbury then sunny areas increasing from afternoon, expect southerly breezes dying out later at night.
HIGHS: Mid teen temperatures about Nelson and along the West Coast, 13-14 degree high’s about Canterbury and Marlborough.

Lower South Island

Mostly sunny in Southland and Otago with light east to southeastely breezes, some cloud at times in coastal Otago. Morning frosts in inland areas.

A fairly smart looking Tuesday
« Reply #13 on: November 07, 2012, 11:05:04 PM »
Much of the country should see sunshine at some stage and in some cases it's started off crunchy but the big yellow should stay for much of the day in those areas.

Temperatures have dropped below freezing over the far south and frosts developed with temperatures of minus one and two recorded at Dunedin airport, Lumsden and Manapouri and it's zero in Queenstown, Gore and Oamaru.

Southerly quarter winds kept temperatures a little higher than expected overnight over many North Island areas however tonight if the winds fade away there could be a noticeable drop in temperature.

Now cloud and a handful of showers could dot eastern parts of the North Island today so Gisborne and Napier look decidely average at this point. Also some cloud build ups later over the upper north could produce a shower or two.

The frosts in the south have surprised a few this week."Some of these lows are more like August than this late in the year" says weather analyst Richard Green.

" The cold nights will come and go for the early part of November and some of the minimum temperatures are almost six or seven degrees below average which is frustrating for growers" he says." Icy windscreens for drivers just before summer kicks in seems a little harsh as well!"

Yesterday's windchill factors were low in a cool to cold southerly breeze but showers were mostly scattered and blue skies were fairly predominant in the west.

The week ahead as of today looks mostly dry however pockets of showers may pop up across the upper north and inland ranges in the afternoons from time to time.
