A few showers in the west of the North Island today clear early afternoon however perhaps not clearing till evening south of Waikato through to Kapiti, gusty southwesterlies strong at times ease later in the day dying out at night in some inland areas. Showers about Wairarapa become confined to the coast in the morning, brisk southwesterlies ease at night. Cloudy areas and some sun for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, the odd shower also mainly just on the coast with cool southwesterlies dying out at night.
Some morning rain in Wellington clears by midday with sunny breaks developing, the odd shower may pop up again in the evening however. Brisk southerlies ease later in the day.
Mostly sunny in Nelson today with a southwest breeze dying off later in the day. Sunny areas and some cloud on the West Coast with westerlies, a few showers may continue to affect southern Fiordland during the day with snow flurries to 400m.
Morning rain or showers clear about Canterbury and Marlborough, cool southwesterlies ease later in the day. Late afternoon and evening a few showers develop the foothills and ranges in both regions from Mid Canterbury northwards, those showers may spread to the coast then will clear at night.
Cool southwesterlies in Southland and Otago strong at times about the coast, showers in Southland with a risk of hail spread into Otago during the morning then clearing at night. Snow flurries to 400m.
High’s in the mid teens today across the North Island, a cooler 13 to 14 for Wellington and some Central North Island areas. A high of 15 for Nelson today, 13 to 14 for Canterbury, Marlborough and the West Coast although South Westland may only experience 12 to 13 degree high’s. Southland and Otago will be chilly on 10 to 11 degrees.

Cooler across the country today

The warmest spots across the country today are Whangarei and Tauranga each on 16 degrees so if you are thinking it’s a bit cold today you would be right. For our main centres Auckland is on 15, Wellington 11.5, Christchurch 13, Dunedin 7, Invercargill 9.5 and Queenstown is on 7 degrees.
We have some very cold air over the country at the moment, combined with persistent southwesterlies it is not letting the land warm up very much. Much like blowing on some hot soup to cool it down the wind does the same, cools things down.
Auckland is certainly feeling the wind at the moment with southwesterlies at 54 km/h gusting to 70km/h at times.
Showers continue to move across much of the North Island in the west and east coast. Wellington looks to of got some reasonable rain early this morning and the Marlborough Sounds around midday.
Isolated heat showers are developing along the foothills of Mid and North Canterbury and also on the inland ranges of Buller, there would most likely be some small hail in these showers also. Southland and Otago look to be experiencing shower with a few being short and sharp, the odd lightning strike looks to have gone off in the southern reaches of Fiordland too.
Parts of Southland and Hanmer have had the most rain for the past 24 hours, up to 33mm has fallen in Tuatapere and 30.4mm in Hanmer.
