Friday's national forecast
« Reply #7 on: October 06, 2012, 12:26:13 AM »
Sunny areas to start today over the North Island however cloud quickly increasing in the afternoon, west to northwesterly winds increase also and at night showers develop in western areas. There will be the odd light showers about the Kapiti and Taranaki coastlines during the day. Weather will be warm on the east coast with increasing high cloud and northwesterlies freshening in the afternoon. Northwesterlies will be strong to gale force about Cook Strait during the day.

Cloudy with showers on the West Coast and gusty northerlies, expect rain in Fiordland. Rain spreads north in the afternoon and evening easing in Fiordland later. Fine on the east coast and about Nelson with plenty of high cloud, winds will be strong from the northwest possibly gusting to gale force at times particularly in inland areas. Some brief rain is possible for Canterbury in the evening as winds tend a little more westerly.

Gusty northwesterlies and high cloud in Otago, west to southwest winds freshen late afternoon however bringing a few showers. Dry to start in Southland with high cloud, gusty westerlies from midday bring showers however. Snow to 400m later at night in Southland, Fiordland and Otago.

17 to 18 degrees can be expected about the Waikato and Bay Of Plenty northwards, low 20’s on the east coast. Mid teen temperatures elsewhere in the North Island. Mid teen temperatures tomorrow on the West Coast of the South Island and about Southland, temperatures of 19 to 21 can be expected along the east coast. Around 17 for Nelson.

Timaru hits 25 degrees
« Reply #8 on: October 06, 2012, 12:36:58 AM »
Timaru has hit 25 degrees this afternoon due to the influence of the northwesterly airflow over the country at present, that would have to be the highest temperatures I’ve seen so far this spring. The northwest is cranking up with some inland areas of the South Island reporting strong winds, Ashburton and Timaru currently have the windiest official readings with northwesterlies around 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h.

There is plenty of cloud streaming across the country ahead of a front which is moving through Southland and soon Otago, expect showers with these fronts however the bulk of the wet weather will be on the West Coast.

Cloudy conditions have developed for most western regions of the North Island after sunny areas this morning, it is mostly dry although the odd light shower is about some western coastlines. The east coast is sunny with westerly breezes.

The highest rainfall for the past 24 hours has been about the West Coast of the South Island near the Glaciers and in the ranges behind Gisborne, 10 to 15mm falling in each area.
