«

A mix of sunny areas and some cloud today across the North Island with breezy westerly winds, the odd shower in Northland clearing this morning. Sunny and warm on the east coast with light winds.
Sunny about Dunedin on the east coast through to Nelson in the South Island with light winds. Sunny and cloudy areas north of Greymouth on the West Coast with westerly breezes, cloudier further south with a few showers in Fiordland from afternoon. Areas of cloud about Southland and the Catlins with westerlies and the odd brief shower at times mainly just on the coast. Sunny areas to start in Central Otago with westerlies, high cloud increases in the afternoon.
Temperatures in the high teens in Northland and on the east coast of the North Island today, 16 to 17 about Auckland the Waikato and Bay Of Plenty, mid teens elsewhere. 16 to 17 degrees today in Canterbury through to Nelson, mid teens about coastal Otago. 13 to 14 about Southland, Central Otago and on the West Coast.

The east has it, warmest in Gisborne

The east coast of the North Island has it again with the warmest temperatures around New Zealand due to a prevailing westerly airflow over the country, Gisborne is currently on 19.5 degrees. In fact the east coast of the South Island wasn’t doing too badly either this morning, Christchurch got up to 18.2 degrees at 10am before a northeasterly breeze kicked in. Blenheim is still doing the South Island proud with 18.5 at the present point in time.
It is not really a news worthy day in regards to extreme weather, western areas of both islands are a little cloudy and there is also still one or two showers about. Invercargill is the coldest place on 11 degrees in the land of the black singlet.
Winds aren’t too rough although in the west of the North Island and about western Bay Of Plenty westerly winds are a bit breezy between 25 to 45 km/h so might feel a little chilly at times relatively speaking when those gusts kick up.

The squeeze is on for increasing winds
«
Reply #11 on:

Overnight tonight and during tomorrow the squeeze will be on with isobars starting to get closer together due to an incoming front in the Tasman Sea and an anticyclone to the north of the country.
The main affect of this squeeze will be felt about the Marlborough Sounds, Cook Strait and the lower North Island. Gale northwesterly winds are possible in these areas from midday tomorrow says WeatherWatch.co.nz
Northwesterlies will be breezy to strong at times from North Canterbury through to Blenheim tomorrow afternoon however gale winds are unlikely. From evening the strong northwesterlies about the lower North Island spread into Hawkes Bay and later after midnight down most of the West Coast of the North Island. Coastal Fiordland will experience strong to gale southwesterlies after midnight also.
Rain is likely on the West Coast of the South Island tomorrow and overnight will spread onto western regions in the North Island. Southland and southern parts of Otago will likely experience a few falls from evening.
