It is supposed to get windier and rain starting about midday but nothing heavy until mid evening towards midnight.  Enjoy it while it lasts... get thos chores done this morning.

Low pressure will shaking up our weekend weather.  This system still looks to be a fairly quick-moving system and is unlikely to produce widespread severe weather.  However, we will be keeping an eye on a few places today.

Heavy rain is possible about the West Coast this morning and this afternoon.  Additional heavy rain is possible for the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers as well as inland Southland.  Northwest Nelson could also see heavy rain, but that will likely hold off until this afternoon.  Some thundery falls are also possible.

The South Island’s eastern coast is looking a bit more settled for the early part of the day.  Showers could show up in Christchurch by late afternoon.

The deep south is already seeing a few showers this morning.  More showers are expected for this afternoon as well.

The North Island may see some heavy rain fall about eastern Bay of Plenty, but that won’t show up until around sunset or maybe later.  Heavy rain could show up Taranaki as well.

Showers are already starting to push onto the northern tip of the NI.  Throughout the morning, we will see showers spread across the top of the island.  As we get into this afternoon, rain will spread into the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and East Cape/Gisborne.  A few showers may move into Wellington as well.

Government forecaster MetService has heavy rain warnings in effect for this morning and this afternoon for:

• Northern Fiordland and southern Westland between Milford Sound and Harihari
• The hills and ranges of Northern Southland
• The headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers

Heavy rain warnings are up for northwest Nelson west Motueka for this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon.  Also, a heavy rain warning has been issued for the Bay of Plenty east of Whakatane tonight through much of Sunday.

I don’t know what it’s like at your place, but here in the western Waikato we had some shaking going on early this afternoon.

And it wasn't an earthquake.



My little office was heaving and weaving thanks to the gusty northeast winds that started to blow about an hour ago.  Light rain also started to fall.  Well, as much as light rain can fall in this wind.  The drops are on more of a diagonal trajectory.

A quick check of observations around the North Island last hour showed the strongest winds to be around Auckland and Taranaki with most stations reporting sustained winds of 43 km/h.

I can tell you that where I am, near Te Awamutu, the sustained winds are about around 10-15 km/h.  But the gusts were pushing 70 km/h during the last hour.

Temperatures at last report included 7 at Queenstown.  Gore and Invercargill were both at 8.  Dunedin was at 9.

On the “warmer” end of things, Whangarei was reporting 17.  Tauranga and Gisborne were both at 16.

Auckland was at 15.  Wellington was at 14.  Christchurch was 13.
