Fine with some high cloud. Temperature 15.8° after a low of 12.4°. The high is expected to be 18°. NW wind at the moment with gusts up to around 20kmh.

overcast in Reefton at the moment.
heavy rain overnight with large thunderstorm @ 4.40am which knocked out power to the town for 4-5 hours.
recorded 17.1mm rain, but not sure if i missed some when power went off as while the base station was running on batteries, nothing has been recorded it seems.

It is still nice here was the light wind from the north.
The wind is gusting at 11.2 KM per hour.
The air temperature is 18.3 c.
There is lots of high cloud at the moment.
The north west wind was 1c cooler today then the normal
September northwest average temperature.

ended up being quite a pleasant day in Reefton after all the excitement in the early hours.
temp got to 17.4°C with plenty of sun and no further rain...yet. forecast is for very heavy rain overnight again.
also think i missed approx 5.7mm of rain while power down. makes 22.8mm for the day so far.

Cloudy in the west of the North Island today with west to northwest winds, showers south of Taranaki and the odd shower may develop south of Auckland in the afternoon. Dry on the east coast with plenty of high cloud. A mix of sun and clouds in the Bay Of Plenty.

Cloudy on the West Coast of the South Island with breezy west to northwest winds and showers, sunny and mild out on the east coast with strong northwester lies easing late afternoon or evening. Temperatures in the low 20's today right along the east coasts of both islands, 17 degrees can be expected on average north of Auckland. Mid teen temperatures for the rest of the country.

Currently the windiest spot in the country is Gore with northwesterlies averaging 59km/h and gusting to 83km/h, gale force winds are rated above 62 km/h so those winds are very strong. Also inland mid Canterbury through to North Otago is recieving quite strong winds gusting to around 60 to 75 km/h from the northwest. The lower North Island and Cook Strait is experiencing quite strong winds at the moment too.

Last night I took a drive to Hokitika and on the way the wind was blowing very strongly all the way from about Darfield right through to Kumara, the rain was also very heavy at times. I experienced one tree that had fallen over and a few small slips in the Otira Gorge.

There were quite a few thunderstorms on the West Coast last night also however due to their nature the lightning tended to be quite scattered and infrequent, the storms were infact more in the alps themselves and to a lesser extent right on the coast. Still heard some nice booming thunder though.

Temperatures right along the east coast’s of both islands are sitting in the high teens or low 20’s region today, Christchurch and Timaru are experiencing the warmest readings currently between 22 and 23 degrees.
