Sunday's national forecast

It will be a day of increasing clouds and developing rainfall for much of the country. The Tasman low is already sending the first batch of rain toward Taranaki this morning.
As we go through the morning expect the rain to continue to move onto the western sections of the North Island and north-western South Island. By this afternoon, the western half of both islands should be seeing precipitation.
Auckland and Hamilton will see a few showers this morning. A more general rain is expected for this afternoon. Christchurch will likely see a fair amount of sunshine this morning with clouds and rain moving in late this afternoon. By tonight, much of the country will see precipitation.
A few rumbles of thunder are possible with this system. Taranaki could see some thundery falls this morning. Thunderstorms are also possible tonight about Northland, Auckland, western Waikato, Taranaki and Nelson.

Thunder may rumble today and tonight

The incoming centre of low pressure will bring rain to the country today, tonight, tomorrow and Tuesday. With that rain, may come some lightning and thunder.
Currently, Live Lightning Tracker is showing several strikes over the Tasman. As we go through the morning, thunderstorms may move on shore about Taranaki and Nelson.
There is a better chance for thunderstorms tonight along the western sections of the North Island. From Northland, south through Auckland and western Waikato, down to Taranaki. Nelson could also see some thundery falls tonight. Brief heavy rain will be possible with these storms.
Additional heavy rain will be possible about Taranaki on tomorrow, although the chances for thunderstorms will greatly diminish.
The southern Waikato, Wanganui and Nelson also run the risk of seeing some heavy rain tomorrow.
Late Monday and Tuesday, as the low start heads east of New Zealand, the heavy rain threat will shift to the eastern regions. Eastern Bay of Plenty, East Cape, Marlborough and Canterbury could all see some heavy rain.

Tokoroa - 11pm
Wasn't home at all today but it was raining when we got home at 9:30pm and hasn't stopped - 8.7mm so far in two periods - once at 12 midday for two hours for about 5mm of rain and now a further 3.7mm and getting heavier, currently at 2.6mm of rain per hour. The Nor-East wind is picking up, currently gusting to 24km/hr. 10.1ºC and steady.
