Mainly overcast in Waitakere this morning, but cloud has broken to some extent from midday and some sunshine has been seen.  Our high today has been 14°C around midday, falling now of course and currently 12.7°C - still some sunny spells about.

Friday’s national forecast
« Reply #14 on: July 15, 2012, 12:03:11 AM »
Light north to northeasterly winds across the upper half of the North Island, expect cloudy areas and a few sunny breaks. Mostly cloudy about Taranaki with northwesterlies increasing and the odd light shower at times. Cloudy about Manawatu and western areas south of there with northwesterlies increasing, strong about Wellington. A few light showers may move through at times. Sunny on the east coast with northwesterlies freshening in Wairarapa by afternoon, also increasing high cloud.

High’s a bit warmer then yesterday around 14 to 15 degrees for most places, a degree or two lower for inland areas.

Cloudy on the West Coast of the South Island with rain, heavy south of Westport. Breezy northeasterly winds. Rain eases in South Westland at night. Breezy northwesterlies about Nelson with increasing cloud, showers later in the evening or at night. Northwesterlies will be strong to gale force about the outer Sounds, a few showers move in to the Marlborough Sounds later at night. Sunny along the east coast down through to South Canterbury with gusty northwesterlies strong at times inland, also high cloud. Cloudy about Southland and Otago with light winds, a few light showers from afternoon turning to rain in the evening.

High’s along the West Coast, also about Southland and Otago staying in the low double figures. From South Canterbury northwards along the east coast temperatures should get up into the mid teens in the afternoon.

A sodden day expected for parts SI's west
« Reply #15 on: July 15, 2012, 12:05:44 AM »
A frontal boundary is bringing rain to the South Island this morning. Heavy rain is likely with this system and due to the slow movement of the system, this could be a prolonged heavy rain event for the western and northwestern South Island.

Government forecaster MetService has issued Heavy Rain Warnings for:

  • Westland, south Otira-  Between now and 9am Sunday, 300 to 500mm of rain is expected on the ranges. Rainfall rates of up to 20 to 30mm an hour are possible through this evening and again late Saturday night inot Sunday morning. Coastal sections may receive 150 to 200mm during this time.
  • The headwaters of the Otago Lakes and Rivers- Through tonight, 150 to 200mm of rain is expected near the Divide
  • Headwaters of the Canterbury Lakes and Rivers south of Rangitata River- Through late tonight, 150 to 200mm of rain is expected near the Divide. More heavy rain is possible Saturday and early Sunday

MetService has also issued a Severe Weather Watch for heavy rain for the northwestern South Island, including the Westland and Buller ranges north of Otira from tonight through early Sunday morning and western Nelson during Saturday and Sunday morning.
