RE: WEATHER IN ARGENTINA
« on: May 29, 2022, 05:59:15 PM »
Record cold is lingering in South America, threatening the key corn crops of Brazil and Argentina.

On Thursday, May 26 it was a historically frigid day across parts of Central-Southern Argentina.

The weather station at Puerto Madryn logged an astonishing -8.6C (16.5F) — a new record low for the month of May in books dating back to 1961, busting the old record of -6.8C (19.8F) set in 1993; also Viedma, with its reading -5.0C (23F), also felled a record.

South America’s polar chill will expand northwards over the next few days, soon reaching the tropics.

ARGENTINA’S COLDEST AUTUMN SINCE 1976…
« Reply #1 on: June 20, 2022, 07:09:24 AM »
Argentina has been in the grips of a fierce Antarctic blast in recent weeks, one that is showing few signs of abating.

May 2022 finished colder than average across the country, with some northern locales suffering -3C below the multidecadal norm. The month was also drier than average, according to official SMN data.

Moreover, Argentina’s entire Autumn season (March-April-May) was the nation’s coldest since 1976 (solar minimum of cycle 20).

It was also the fifth coldest in the historical series, also bested by 1971, 1968 and 1965:

…AS SOUTH AMERICA’S FREEZE INTENSIFIES
Widespread frosts are continuing to sweep much of South America, ravaging some of the continent’s key growing regions.

Remarkable temperatures have been noted in recent days, including the -7.7C (18.1F) at Rosario AP, Argentina–just 0.1C away from the record low for June; the -3C (26.6F) in Uruguay; the 0.7C (33.3F) in Paraguay; the -3.9C (25F) at Sao Joaquim, Brazil; and also the -0.1C (31.8F) in the Brazilian municipality of Uruguaiana–which stands at an elevation of only 62m (203ft).

Further drops were logged in the Peruvian Andes, with Chuapalca suffering -21.6C (-6.9F).

Elsewhere, -10.6C (12.9F) was noted at El Alto International Airport, Bolivia; 1.7C (35.1F) was logged Robore, Bolivia–which resides at a low elevation and latitude 18; and finally, Las Palmas, Paraguay dipped to record low of -3.4C (25.9F).

ARGENTINA’S COLDEST JUNE IN 20 YEARS
« Reply #2 on: July 17, 2022, 07:19:48 PM »
Argentina’s official Meteorological Service has tallied the nation’s temperatures for June — and they’ve come out frosty.

Cold wave after cold wave has been sweeping South America in recent weeks, as a ‘meridional‘ jet stream flow continues to kick Antarctic chills northwards.

The first cold wave struck Argentina at the end of May and persisted into first days of June, reports diarionorte.com — anomalous readings were noted up and down the country, with frog noted in Buenos Aires and south of the Litoral.

By mid-June, another shot of polar cold had invaded southern Patagonia. The Antarctic air mass then gradually moved from south to north, breaking records as it traversed the provinces of Tierra del Fuego, Santa Cruz, Chubut, Río Negro and Neuquén.

The wave reached the province of Buenos Aires and the central region of Córdoba by June 21.

For the country as a whole, the National Meteorological Service confirms this was Argentina’s coldest June in twenty years.
