Record Setting Warmth Across Southern Wisconsin

The winter of 2011-2012 went down as one of the warmest on record for southern Wisconsin

Posted Wednesday, March 21, 2012 --- 11:50 a.m.

From the National Weather Service:

The winter of 2011-2012 (Dec - Feb) went down as one of the warmest on record for southern Wisconsin.

Milwaukee finished with the 5th warmest average temperature and Madison the 4th, with the state overall coming in with the 3rd warmest on record.

The well above normal temperatures have continued right into March, making for a record setting start to the year so far.

Through March 20th 2012, Milwaukee is in first place for the warmest start to the year on record, while Madison remains in second place.

In addition, Milwaukee and Madison are in first place for the warmest March on record through March 20th by a whopping 5.8 degrees at Milwaukee and 3.7 degrees at Madison.

These very warm temperatures are expected to continue for a couple more days, with cooler temperatures late in the week as a low pressure system passes just to our south. However, even these cooler conditions are expected to remain above normal, making a record or near record first three months of the year likely.

While three records have been tied or broken in Milwaukee since March 11th, six have been reached in Madison, including five in a row through Wednesday. More record highs are possible today through Thursday, the first few days of spring.

The record high of 82 in Madison last Thursday was definitely one for the record books, being noteworthy for a few reasons. First, the previous record was smashed by 13 degrees, a margin seldom seen in breaking temperature records. Second, it was the earliest 80 degree day of the year on record, beating the previous earliest date by two weeks! In addition, the high of 82 tied for the warmest temperature ever recorded in Madison in the month of March. The temperature hit 80 again on Saturday and 81 on Sunday and Tuesday. Not to mention, Madison has the potential to reach 80 degrees once again on Wednesday.
