Heavy snow for the ranges of Marlborough and north Canterbury

A complex trough should move slowly east over the country today (Friday) and Saturday, with a low expected to develop northeast of the North Island on Sunday. Cold southerlies and rain are expected to spread over eastern and southern parts of the South Island today and Saturday, then the North Island on Sunday. Snow showers are expected to 300 metres about Southland and Otago this afternoon, then to 500 metres about Canterbury and Marlborough this evening. However, more persistent rain is expected to spread over Canterbury and Marlborough Saturday afternoon and evening, with snow falling to 200 metres overnight. The heaviest snow is expected above 400 metres about inland parts of north Canterbury and southern Marlborough, where 20 to 30cm could accumulate over a 12 hour period from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.
