The fate of Christchurch's Princess Margaret Hospital will be decided within the next two years, while a proposal for Ashburton's earthquake-damaged facility will be revealed next month, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) chief executive David Meates says.

The comments follow yesterday's announcement by the Government that it would set aside $500 million to transform Christchurch's health sector.

The $600m redevelopment of the city's quake-hit Burwood and Christchurch hospitals will be the "largest and most complex building project in the history of New Zealand's public health service", Health Minister Tony Ryall said yesterday.

The project will see more than 150 extra beds and a range of new facilities at the central-city and Burwood hospitals.

The news has been warmly received by the city's health professionals, but questions remain over some of Canterbury's other quake-damaged hospitals.

From a person who works there. PMH is to be closed.
And then knock the building down.
