Sign of the Takahe gets green light for repairs

The historic Sign of the Takahe in Cashmere will be repaired with the cost split between insurance and the Christchurch City Council.

Councillors today agreed the Gothic revival-inspired building should be repaired to 67 per cent of New Building Standard (NBS).

The category 1 heritage building was closed after suffering cracking to stone masonry walls and losing several parapet stones and chimneys during Canterbury's earthquakes.

The Port Hills landmark had been a popular restaurant and bar before the quakes, but engineers discovered it met only 30 per cent of the new building code.

The council's insurers have agreed to pay the council $1.9 million so the building can be brought up to 50 per cent of NBS, but council staff and heritage consultants have recommended the council bring the building up to 67 per cent of NBS.

That would add about $1.5 million to the cost of the repair work, which would be funded from the council's Infrastructure and Building Improvement Allowance.
